Anyone got any recent turnaround times? My daughter's needs renewing and they say 6-weeks +, but she visits her dad every 6-8 weeks so I'm kind of stuck.
Also, do you know if I HAVE to send the original old passport?
Did our sons and it took 10 days in total. Posted it Friday before last (13th) and go it back on Monday (23rd) this week and yes you do have to send the original old passport unless you want to delay things as they will request it.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Talked to the HM passport office on the phone today, you dont have to send in your old passport if you need a replacement one and live in Switzerland. It does give you this option on the form, just had to provide a colour copy.

Strange the guy on then phone took some effort in looking it up, Switzerland was not one of the countries affected! He said when the new passport comes just cut of the right hand side corner of the old one! Picture is hanging out of mine but I am travelling and just been through passport control - no issues ! Did get my application in the post today!

Me too.
We sent the application off originally with a full colour copy based on the information given on the form but a very nice lady from the passport office telephoned and said they couldn't issue a new passport until they had received the old (unexpired) one. It still only took ten days including that delay as I posted the passport off on the day of the phone call.

We had wanted to keep the original as a relative was seriously ill following a severe stroke and we thought we may have to travel at short notice but that was not a good enough reason for them.

Re: UK Passport renewal

There may have been a mistake in what you were told. Or the procedure may have changed of course. My understanding is that you can apply with a photocopy but they'll simply hold your application until they receive the actual (old) passport.

Re: UK Passport renewal

What confused us was that the form said you had to send in ALL passports. We rang about that (our children have French passports) and they said yes you do, but we'll send them back the other nationality passports with your new UK one.

Well I didn't. My youngest son crosses the border everyday on his way to and from school (its a short cut) he is not with me but with a lady who drives him so she always has his French passport for ease.

No one said anything. The new passports (renewal) came back within 2 weeks

Re: UK Passport renewal

Just to let everyone know, it took two weeks from posting to picking up at the DHL, I think in actual fact it took them 6 working days, as it was posted on a Friday and so would've arrived on the Monday (2nd March) and was posted back to me on the following Tuesday (10th).

Re: UK Passport renewal

I posted my passport renewal application along with my current passport on Tue 7th April by Priority Post with tracking(< CHF 10). It was for a 48 page version.

HM Passport received it on Mon 13th, they posted the re(new)ed passport back on Wed 15th and I received it on Friday 17th.

The actual turnaround was less than 3 days.

I am very happy and impressed with the service as I initially considered using the Premium same day service.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Dear All,

I need to send my passport for renewal and have 2 questions please:

1) Is this the correct link I found on google for renewal application: https://www.gov.uk/apply-renew-passport

2) What happens to my current (old) passport? I have valid visas in there, hence my questions.

thanks
p

Yes that is the correct form.

Your old passport will be returned to you with the corner cut off to show that it is invalid for travel. You will have to take that plus your new passport with you if travelling to the countries where the visas are needed.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Have to send new photos for the whole family for the upcoming renewal. The local photographer studio meanwhile has upped the sticks and left.

Is the automated photo booth going to do the trick? If not, then any recommendations for UK PP conversant photographers around Wadenswil/Horgen area?

Thanks

We used the automated photo booth and there's never been a problem with them for UK as passports. Just make sure they conform to the rules given on the website and they'll be fine.

+1. Just make sure you pick the EU photo option.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Just renewing mine - how did you guys send yours? Just plop it in a post box? Application thing doesn't say anything about using signed for services or anything like that?

Why did I pay for a courier if I have to post it off anyway?

Re: UK Passport renewal

The new online service is great.

Took less than two weeks to get mine done last month. Daughters took about the same back in February.

Oh and yet the photos are perfectly fine from the automated booths at the train stations over here.

I sent my via recorded delivery from here. The courier fee is for them to return it to you. They send the old passport back in a seperate delivery from the new passport so you will have two DHL deliveries ( possibly both on the same day).
