Did our sons and it took 10 days in total. Posted it Friday before last (13th) and go it back on Monday (23rd) this week and yes you do have to send the original old passport unless you want to delay things as they will request it.
Mine just too 8 days!

If people need one - do it now before the inevitable pre-holiday rush.

Re: UK Passport renewal

What happens now with regards to the Brexit, will we all need new ones after it's wrapped up, or are they already renewed as non-EU? If I were to renew this year would I get a non-EU one, and if not would I have to renew again in 6 months (or however long it is)?

Nothing is changing just now. The UK is still a member of the EU. What happens after the Uk leaves is anybody's guess.

So current EU are still valid until they expire, even if that is 11 years from now?

Here's an article from today that addresses a few issues, including passports. There's a lot of negotiating that needs to happen in the next few years!

Re: UK Passport renewal

Quick mention, as I was doing the legwork for renewing hubby's passport, that the Passport Office is trialling that you can upload your passport photos direct rather than having to send them with the application. I can't give more details than that as I didn't try it out so whether it can be used for photos that need a signatory on the back I don't know.

Unless your passport has been destroyed or you look nothing like your old photo then there is no need to get it signed on the back. Rules changed after biometric data taken from the photo.

Re: UK Passport renewal

A bit more than that FMF.

"When you need someone else to sign your form and photo

You must get your form and one of your 2 photos signed if you’re applying for a:

•first adult passport
•first child passport
•replacement for a lost, stolen or damaged passport
•renewal of a passport for a child aged 11 or under
•renewal of a passport if your appearance has changed and you can’t be recognised from your existing passport"

https://www.gov.uk/countersigning-passport-applications

But yeah, most people shouldn't need a signatory for a straight renewal of their adult passport.

Just as well as I don't know anyone here in Switzerland who meets the signatory criteria.

Mine got destroyed & a forum member offered to countersign. He was not on the list but said he had signed others with no problem.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Just for info: old passport sent off on the 19th June, delivered to HM Passport Office in Durham 23rd June, new passport received just now by DHL courier delivery 29th June. And it's for 10 years and 1 month since he had a month left on the old passport. Wow!

They carry over up to 9 months, so I sent mine 9 months ahead.

Also got it back within 10 days. Ditto for a colleague: 10 days or less

Because they can get reliable data from other parts of your photo - don't need the thumbs.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Yet another "for info".

UK renewal done online (forms / payment etc) 4th October. Send signed printout of 1 page of the form and 2 photos with Swiss post (signed) same day to HMPO in Durham. Received new passport today (17th October).

I thought 13 days was a good, until I now read some of the "faster" times above

Very fast and far less hassle etc than the last time I did it 10 years ago sending via Geneva.

Re: UK Passport renewal

The all-online option to renew your UK passport works brilliantly well. They even encourage you to take your own photo with your phone, and you just sign the new passport when it arrives. Your old passport is the only thing that needs to be physically sent to the UK. The new passport came by DHL 9 days after I applied.

It was quite a contrast with the process 10 years ago, although I was a bit sad that the new passport no longer came in a old-fashioned buff envelope with "On Her Britannic Majesty's Service" along the top

Re: UK Passport renewal

Did the one day renew your passport service today in London. The need for photos from which they can extract biometric data clearly means they are much stricter. The initial two with spectacles were no good (despite a Heathrow e-gate recognising me with different spectacles on Saturday from my old passport). The next set from their own machine, which confirmed they were acceptable, were accepted over the counter and I was told to come and collect in 4h.

After 3h got a call from the Passport Office and was told that the second set were no good either as my eyes were too low (I blame my mother!). Actually without my glasses on I can't see the boxes which are supposed to outline your eyes on the machine, but the machine and the counter staff had said they were OK. Headed back to the PO and invested in a further £6 batch of photos. This time told a 2h wait. However a further call from the helpful young lady at the PO told me it would be ready in an hour, and so it was.

Had I been through this exercise postally it could have taken several weeks. I can find nobody who can see any difference between the last two sets. So my advice is to get it right!

Re: UK Passport renewal

Hey all - a quick question re. Passport Renewals.

I'm regularly travelling for business so I can't wait or a passport renewal, I have an appointment booked with the office in London and have paid for the 4-hour turnaround service tomorrow.

It should be a relatively straightforward judging by the limited information I needed to provided + the standard 2 photos (no countersignature required etc.)

But there is one snag, it asks for a UK residential address? I have placed my parents home as I moved back there before moving to Zurich but is there a completely separate process I'm missing for people living abroad?

I have my B-permit and some official documents with my Zurich address incase they need it but I wonder if anyone has been in this position.

Thanks!

K

Did you complete it as an "overseas passport renewal"? It shouldn't ask you for a UK residential address, at least it didn't when I renewed mine, but then again, they seem to change the form with alarming regularity so I could be out of date.

You can’t use either service if you’re outside the UK. You may be able to apply for an emergency travel document.
If I were you I'd just stay quiet about living abroad. I did the same thing a few years ago when I lived in Switzerland. Gave my parent's address and got my passport 4 hours late.
