Yup, it took just under 3 weeks before they even opened my envelope. There's a tracking service from them, at the moment it still says that they are checking my application. Another friend here in ZH told me it took about 7 weeks in total to get his back.
4 weeks for mine on the nose, got it yesterday.

Including very slow post outgoing to the UK similar to your issue, I'm guessing its in the post room under a stack of other applications and has nothing to do with the post.

We've been sending post (letters and documents) to and from the UK and Netherlands. 2 - 3 days max by normal post. Was amazed a letter posted in London Friday night, arrived here Monday morning.
I once received a letter from the UK on the day of the postmark.

But I guess the date was set incorrectly.

UK passport renewals from Switzerland - 24th Aug 2020

Just found out from a slightly miffed applicant who was told that the guidelines they have for this is currently 8 weeks from receipt (i.e. acknowledged by them via automated email) and thought I'd share here

N.B. these guidelines are on a PER COUNTRY BASIS and may be different for new applications vs renewals

If you need to find out about your UK passport application during these fun times call the following number:

Re: UK passport renewals from Switzerland - 24th Aug 2020

It took 6 weeks for me last month. The biggest part of that was waiting for them at acknowledge they had recieved it - about 4 weeks after FedEx had delivered it. After that I had it in 2 weeks.

More discussion on this thread though.

Re: UK Passport renewal

I'm in a bit of a pickle, I came to Switzerland on a (non-UK) EU passport and want to come back to the UK for Xmas. I naturalised as a British citizen a year ago, but didn't end up getting the British passport because of the Covid situation. So now either I get the UK passport now in CH or hope there's no trouble at the gates in Dec/Jan because of Brexit.

Why?? Do you think they will bar EU persons from entering? Just ask your embassy how to get your passport and what is to do?

Not bar, I was imagining having to pay visa fees to get into a country I'm a citzen of. But according to this:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/visiting...1-january-2021
EU citizens will still be able to make short trips without a visa.

You will probably need to go for an interview before being given your first UK passport FYI

By law, British citizens must travel to and from the UK on their British passport. I'm a dual citizen and travelled to Gatwick on my Australian passport -- no visa required. The border guard picked up that I was also a British citizen (presumably there was a flag in the system; there is no indication in my Australian passport and I wasn't born in the UK) and I was asked to wait while she checked with her supervisor. 30 minutes later, I was invited into an office for a short chat (which took about two minutes)... I waited again... and finally I was allowed in. Total time wasted, about an hour and a half.

If WalnutKarma hasn't actually applied for a British passport yet, they may be luckier than I was. I don't know if the UK Border Agency is sophisticated enough to link citizenships, or just passports.

Are you sure about that? I have certainly travelled there on Swiss documents multiple times with no problems or questioning. Couldn't find any requirement with a quick google...

Yes, I'm pretty sure*. There was no other reason for me being held up at LGW! Besides, I have read this somewhere, and the same also applies (not for British passports, obviously) to Australia, and to the US; remember Boris's problems trying to fly with his family to Mexico through the US, when a US official saw that his place of birth was listed in his British passport as the US, so he was a US citizen (automatically), but wasn't travelling on his US passport? (The reason was that BJ hadn't renewed his US passport since he was a child, as he had lived in the UK almost all his life.) He was forced to buy a new ticket for himself, diverting around the US, while his family carried on with the original plans.

*Well, I googled, and there's a couple of people on Quora who say that you can enter the UK as a British citizen, using a foreign passport. This may be correct, but I can't find corroboration on any official government website. Presumably it's not encouraged. And presumably the officious Border Agency woman wanted to check my right of abode in the UK (which I had way before I became a UK citizen) as thoroughly as possible...

As a matter of interest, here's what Australia has to say about Australian citizens returning home:

Entering and leaving Australia

All Australians, including dual nationals, should leave and enter Australia on their Australian passport. If you have a passport from another country for example; a British passport, you can use this for your return to the United Kingdom, but you will need your Australian passport for travel to Australia when departing the United Kingdom and entering Australia.

Those trying to enter Australia as an Australian citizen but without an Australian passport will face difficulties and delays. An Australian passport is the preferred and most conclusive proof of Australian citizenship when travelling.

International airlines have an obligation to carry only appropriately documented passengers to Australia. Appropriate documentation for Australian nationals is an Australian passport. Appropriate documentation for a foreign national is a visa to enter Australia, Australian citizens do not qualify for a visa in a foreign passport for entry to Australia. If an Australian national attempts to board a flight to Australia without an Australian passport, airlines will likely be unable to verify their claim to Australian citizenship at the time of check-in and may refuse boarding.

I think that given there is no obligation to renew your British passport if you are a dual National it is ok to travel on a foreign passport if you no longer have a valid UK one.
If you are a current UK passport holder then you are supposed to enter the UK using that one but I’m not sure how rigourously they enforce it.

I believe a British national can enter the UK with an expired UK passport. But you should have another one if you want to leave a country that has passport control on exit (Like Switzerland).

Re: UK Passport renewal

FYI, just sent old passport by Swiss Post (registered with signature). Was CHF10 + CHF 3 for custom declaration related stuff. So CHF13 in total and will get there in 2-4 days (weekend).

CHF10 if you fill the custom declaration paperwork yourself, I ain't that tight so paid the CHF3. It was insured for CHF300.

Re: UK Passport renewal

I sent my old passport 1 week ago.

I just got an email saying-

"We are sorry that it is taking longer than usual to process your application due to COVID-19. If we donít need any further information to progress your application, you should receive your passport within 8 weeks."

My online status though still shows, please send the passport etc. So I assume they have not opened it yet?

Err, how would they have sent you an email if they hadn't seen who the application was from?
