Re: UK Passport renewal

Be aware that with Swiss photobooths, if you fit your face into the circle on the screen, the photo may not meet the (newish) standards required.

Great idea and fully back it but I'm a bit confused over the wording:

Quote:

Passport renewal facilities have recently been withdrawn by the British Foreign office in Switzerland forcing Brits resident in Switzerland and surrounding France to refer to Paris! This is seen as a blackmailing tactic to force Britain into the EU! To disprove this believe, we petition Gordon Brown to re-open passport renewal facilities in Geneva thus enabling British citizens to renew their passports without the hassle of referring to Paris. Switzerland appears to be the only European country without such facilities.

Should read Switzerland?
I agree. It's a shame really as this one small error puts the credibility of the whole petition into question. I doubt our beloved sub-prime minister will take much notice especially as it is incorrect to claim that Switzerland is the only country affected.

Re: New British Passport

Since 1 Jan 2009, British Passports of Swiss residents need to be renewed in at the British Consulate General in Paris. This involves courier fees, a
fairly hefty passport fee of 145 Euros (compared to GBP 72 in England).

http://ukinfrance.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/

Why Paris for W. European Expats? No idea, if you have to send your passport abroad anyway, why can't you just send it back to the UK?

During the processing time, you have to get by without a passport, thus not leave Switzerland.

I thought I would try and renew my passport on a short visit to London. The quickest service is at least a week (of staying put in the UK without a passport), maybe longer.

It is unbelievable complicated / expensive for expats to renew their passports.

I thought of trying to get a second British passport, but the criteria are also fairly complicated.

Conclusion: If you are planning to be in the UK for more than a week, it is worth considering renewing your passport. If not, then you are a bit stuck.

Re: UK Passport renewal

For your information folks.

I should be flying to the UK from Zurich on friday morning for a week on the norfolk broads.
Admittedly I was late realizing my 10 year Uk passport was about to run out but I sent it in 3 weeks ago in the hope their 10 workdays plus postage time would be just enough.

According to the friendly Scots on the Careline my new passport was processed on the 23rd June and i should have received it already. (especially as we have to pay in advance for the fast courier service)

But no courier has arrived... all careline can do is send an "escalation" email to Paris so they call me back. This can take up to 72 hours (and i'm presuming they dont call weekends so it will take longer)

I also phoned the courier service TNT but they have no record of anything being sent to me either last week or this.

So my passport is lost in the system somewhere... I know its my own fault for hoping 3.5 weeks would be enough time and i should have cancelled flights, hotels & boat a week ago... but its so frustrating to know they were fast with processing the new passport but its still sitting in some office or courier depot somewhere. Grrrr

Re: UK Passport renewal

With regard to photographs, I had to get the photographs done for my son's passport and went to a shop as he was only six weeks old so pretty difficult to do in a booth. I had printed the instructions off the passport website and was glad I had. The shop had a set of instructions which claimed to cover all of Western Europe but the sizes differed to the ones on my sheet. In the end they gave me two photos cut to their size and two cut to my size (which turned out to be the correct one). They also knew nothing about the fact the rules are slightly different for babies and children under 5.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Update. On advice from the consulate in Geneva I was about to go get a travel document from the embassy in Bern... when Paris called

They informed me the passport had been returned to them by TNT as the address was undeliverable. Very odd... especially as TNT has no record of the attempted delivery and its an easy house to find and I've never had problems with deliveries before this. I presumed the courier would have left a note in my postbox if nobody was home.

Anyway... Paris gave me a tracking number and said I will get the passport tomorrow afternoon. (maybe I should camp outside the front door with a TNT DELIVER HERE! sign )

Changing our easyjet flights cost 400 Franks but at least it appears we will be on the boat on the Broads in time.

Now for a few mugs of nerve-calming swiss tea

Re: UK Passport renewal

Just heard on UK radio that UK passports will go up in the UK to GBP 77.50 from September 2009, so God only knows what they will charge us. Reason extra security features.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Just an update and f.y.i.....

I sent off my renewal application form on 18th June and got my new passport back on 10th July - that's about 3 weeks.

Hope this is useful for those who need to renew their passports in time for travel.

I took it to the post office Saturday the 25th of July
And I recieved my new passport back by courrier TODAY! Super

Re: UK Passport renewal

In case this info is useful for anyone else:
the paris embassy website lists two addresses. One physical and one postal and it's not clear which one passports should be sent to. We called the central helpline number that is supposed to deal with queries for this embassy. They take your credit card upfront and charge it for the cost of the call. The info they gave me was to use the Postal address, despite me saying I was going to courier it, which didn't sound right. They also quoted a turnaround time of 10 working days.

In the end we decided to put the physical address first and the postal second (i.e. both).
Specifically, this is what I put on the DHL send address:
British Consulate General
18bis rue d'Anjou,
BP111-08,75363
75008 Paris
This made it to the embassy fine (overnight from Zurich).

In the end it took them 3 working days to turn it around, completely changing my opinion on UK public services!
We sent it by DHL on Tue 4 Aug afternoon
Arrived at the Paris Embassy on Wed 5 Aug morning
Got back to us by courier on Mon 10 Aug morning

They return your old passport, which is useful if you have any long-term visas in there.

Re: UK Passport renewal

I will renew my UK Passport by sending it to the UK by post. It could be several weeks until I receive the new one back. During this time I will have no travel document.

Would it be possible to cross the border in to neighbouring countries armed with just a Swiss driver's licence and or B-Bewilligung or Photocopy of my passport?

Do I still need a passport to roam across land borders in the Schenigen area (say I want to go shopping in France)?

Thanks

Re: UK Passport renewal

I never carry my passport or permit when I drive over to France or Germany, just my drivers licence. Never had any problems.

As long as you have some form of photo id on you you should be ok. But don't send your passport to teh UK - send it to Paris, it will be back in a week.

I need to renew my UK passport, is it still possible to use one from a photo booth or do I have to go to a professional photographer to make sure I get it right?
