Re: UK Passport renewal

At present, I am in my apartment in the Valais - I will return to my home in Vaud on Sunday. I do not know any Brits living close by who could counter-sign my passport photograph, so I have not yet downloaded the passport renewal document. Thus, I thought I would ask my neighbour in Vaud who always does the honours for me to counter sign, when I get back next week, however I am not sure if my printer in Vaud is working 100%! Thus, as time is of the essence, I am wondering if I can just download the whole document here in the Valais in one go and take the papers home with me. I'm sure one or two of you are thinking "what a stupid question", but I don't want to download and PAY the fee only to find I'm blocked by some incompatible tracking system!

My request is genuine, despite the convoluted text!

Unless your appearance has changed drastically since your last passport was issued you don't need to get the photo signed.

When you need someone else to sign your application and photo
a renewal of a passport if your appearance has changed and you canít be recognised from your existing passport

https://www.gov.uk/countersigning-passport-applications

They're sneaky and hide the info away for some peculiar reason. I renewed my passport in 2012 and never had the photos signed. Just as well - I don't know anyone here who would meet the requirements for countersigning!

Unfortunately, the new photos are awful! I look as if I have been crying all night, and about to spend a few years tucked away somewhere at Her Majesty's pleasure!

Re: UK Passport renewal

in the event of the photos needing a signature ,the person does not have to be british.

the last time i needed it doing ( 30 years ago) my village doctor signed. he's swiss.

Re: UK Passport renewal

According to the UK gov link given above about countersignatories:

"If youíre applying from outside the UK, they must have a current British, Irish or other EU, US or Commonwealth passport. But your application will be processed more quickly if they have a British or Irish passport.
When they hold a US, Commonwealth or other EU (not British or Irish) passport, they must provide a colour photocopy of the page with their photograph on it. This must be included with the countersigned application."

Tends to imply a Swiss passport holder doesn't cut the mustard....

So long as it's recognisable as you compared to the previous passport photo it doesn't matter. Yes, I know it probably does to you, but passport photos never look great.

Re: UK Passport renewal

I had new ones taken, and there is a slight improvement! I am just going to send the renewal form off with a little written note stating that there are no Brits living in the area to counter-sign the photo!

From looking at my recently renewed passport, I wouldn't worry too much about what the photo looks like. Your vanity is spared the casual observer, since, once the photo is embedded in the passport and over-written with all the anti-counterfeiting stuff, there's not much detail left - it's a bit like airbrushing!

However, I fear that when an immigration officer swipes your passport s/he probably sees a scan of the full horror of the original.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Well, guess what?! Completed my online form this morning to HMG's passport office, but my credit card would not be accepted for payment by the site. Tried three times to no avail. Tried hubby's - same scenario. Tried a different card - no can do! Thus, sent an email to HMG explaining the situation, to which I hope a solution can be found! As a last resort, perhaps they have a carrier-pigeon return service - or perhaps I will end-up sans papiers!

This is the 3D Secure Visa authorisation portal. When you try and pay, are you redirected to a Visa verification page that asks you for another password?

Our corporate network sees this as unsecure and I had to use a UK based Debit/Credit card to make the payment.

The Passport Services in the UK can temporarily disable this extra payment verification page for you so that you can make your payment.

Also try:

1. make sure no popup blockers are enabled on your browser and set your browser security to low. Disable the firewall if you have one.
2. If you are behind a corporate network, try from home.
3. Try using a UK debit/Visa card if you have one (this is what finally worked for me).
4. Call them and ask if they can disable 3D Secure for you to make the payment (they offered to do this for me failing any other solution).

Re: UK Passport renewal

My application and declaration form was sent back to me. Apparently the signature was 'outside of the box'

I have a large signature so I'm used to this. I am very aware not to sign outside of the box and my signature must have been touching the box. Be careful of this.

Computer said 'No'.

Re: UK Passport renewal

I have just spoken to an extremely efficient and pleasant staff member at HMG's Passport Office. The reason my credit card and that of my husband were not accepted for payment of my passport renewal, is because they are both drawn on the UBS which, for the moment at least, is not being accepted by the Passport Office. Thought I would let you know! The Passport Office people will be contacting me shortly in order to get around this problem!

Re: UK Passport renewal

Just to let you know - we are currently waiting for our daughters first passport - its been 6 weeks since payment was taken and still no updates online

I have called them - to be told "we can not see any more information than what you can see on the screen"

The frustration is the have all the documents - so if we need to get an emergency passport we cant

Do you know anyone with British bank account? I used my debit card to pay for a friends passport renewal when their Swiss credit card was not accepted.
