Re: UK Passport renewal

Ureka! My daughter is visiting, so I tried her Raiffeisen Bank Card - was accepted automatically! Her passport expires on the same day as mine, so we completed her renewal application too!

What difference does it make?

I would assume her daughter lives here as it wouldn't make much sense to renew her passport and pay the exorbitant fees for the privilege if she lives n the UK.

Just wondered if it worked with a Swiss address or if the Raiffeisen card had a UK address attached to it. If a UBS credit card with a Swiss address isn't acceptable it seems strange that a Raiffeisen one is.

Really surprised that the UBS isn't acceptable. When I did my renewal via Paris my UBS card was fine.

I have just spoken to an extremely efficient and pleasant staff member at HMG's Passport Office. The reason my credit card and that of my husband were not accepted for payment of my passport renewal, is because they are both drawn on the UBS which, for the moment at least, is not being accepted by the Passport Office. Thought I would let you know! The Passport Office people will be contacting me shortly in order to get around this problem!

Maybe it's due to the recent 'irregularities' at UBS.

It would appear that UBS is the only Swiss bank affected. A friend just applied for her daughter's passport using her BCN ( Neuchatel cantonal bank) credit card and that worked fine too.
I shall discover shortly if Credit Swiss is affected as OH's passport will be due for renewal soon.
Edit: actually I won't as OH decided not to renew that one as his second British passport still has three years left.

Guess it depends on how recent the "irregularities" you're thinking of were. I renewed my passport in 2012 which was well past their problems with the US courts. It could possibly be the reason though.

It's the only reason I could think of for UBS only to be affected. UK authorities are not always the speediest to react to that sort of thing.

Nothing that the UK authorities need to react to, in any case whatever the outcome.

UBS has offices in London, trades there,it's solvent. Even pays payroll taxes to the HMRC, I doubt they reject those payments.

My daughter was born here, thus does not have any credit/debit cards originating from the UK. I think the Passport Office is only "allergic" to UBS cards/documents, which may be linked to the financial fiasco of a few months back. I sent the renewal forms, plus soon to be expired passports and photos off this morning, and hopefully the new passports will arrive in due course. I'll keep you posted!

Re: UK Passport renewal

I'll be renewing mine soon. I checked out the option of doing it on the spot in London and it only worked out around 10-20 CHF cheaper than doing it the official way from here. Plus I don't need to waste my London time standing around in queues and form filling.

But you aren't without passport if you do it with the same day service in London.

I feel emergency travel is more important when family is abroad so I like to always have my passport valid and with me.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Had two passports renewed last month. Both took between 3-4 weeks from posting form, to delivery.

Highly recommend that you fill in your phone number on the registration form, that way you'll get an SMS from DHL on the morning of the day they'll deliver, plus the tracking number.

Re: UK Passport renewal

If it has been 6 weeks, I'd call them up and ask them what is taking so long? They suggest that it should only take 4 weeks for international applications.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Mine took 2 weeks just after Christmas. I sent it by courier rather than in the post with a letter explaining my Mother was sick and that I might need to travel quickly. Not sure whether the letter helped but I think the extra expense for the courier did. well it helped me anyway knowing they received it next day

Re: UK Passport renewal

I received mine today after 1 month and one week. After 4 weeks the renewal declaration form was sent back to me as my signature was 'touching the borders of the box' that you sign in.

I sent the declaration back a week ago. So once they had that it took them a week to process and send me my new passport.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Just seen this announcement on the Overseas Passport site!

Overseas British passport applications

Get the forms, prices and application details you need if you’re a British national and you want to renew or apply for a British passport from overseas.
Start now

From 7 April 2014 the fee for applying for a UK passport from overseas will be reduced by £45 for adults and £28.50 for children.

Had I known in advance, I would have delayed sending off my application!

Re: UK Passport renewal

I received an email from the Passport Office today in reply to mine dated 17th March, in which I informed them that their website would not accept my credit card in payment of the renewal of my passport, and that of my daughter. They informed me that at the time of my application, their website was down, but was up and running as from 24th March. How comforting to be informed of this on 5th April! The email was sent by the Customer Contact Officer, Operations, Swddog Cyswlt Cwsmeriaid, Gweithrediadau which, for those of us not familiar with the language of the Land of our Fathers, is Newport.

Do you think my new passport will be written in Welsh, and as the application was sent to Durham, how on earth did my email end up in Wales?

Actually I just did a one-day passport application in London and it was surprisingly civilised. I had an appointment for 0945 and was being seen just before 10. I was at the desk for 10 minutes as the clerk checked all the details. I paid at the cashiers and was on my way at 1015 with a slip telling me I could pick up my passport any time after 4 hours. The pick up took me all of 10 minutes. So all in all there wasn't that much messing around. Also, the office is really just around the corner from Victoria station.

Re: UK Passport renewal

Anyone got any recent turnaround times? My daughter's needs renewing and they say 6-weeks +, but she visits her dad every 6-8 weeks so I'm kind of stuck.
Also, do you know if I HAVE to send the original old passport?
