Staying as a tourist after L permit expires My L permit expires in September and I'm wondering how possible it is for me to stay in Switzerland for an additional 3 months as an American tourist. I understand that I would not be allowed to work during this time - I just want to relax and travel before going back to the States. Am I allowed to stay in Switzerland for the 3 months directly after the expiration of my L permit? Do I need to leave the country and re-enter from another (non-Schengen) country? Thanks |
Re: Staying as a tourist after L permit expires I do know people who have done this without problem. I don't know the legality. |
Re: Staying as a tourist after L permit expires I am not sure about Americans. With an EU passport, you can stay an extra 3 months as long as you continue to pay krankenkasse and prove that you have enough money to support yourself. |
Re: Staying as a tourist after L permit expires Hi Sassy, Could you provide some feedback about if it worked for you to stay on as a tourist once your L permit expired? I'm in EXACTLY the same boat and would really love some info. Thanks. |
Re: Staying as a tourist after L permit expires Hey, I have the same question! I has been told that this is not allowed. Could somebody confirm that? Thanks! |

Re: Staying as a tourist after L permit expires My inlaws had recently a problem with their visa.. they overstayed the "maximum number of days allowed" by two days; they were helping us to look after the baby while we were trying to arrange a full-time nanny. The overstay was due to our miscalculating the number of days. The police at the passport control was mad at them, interrogated them for more than an hour and at the end let them know that they will have a penalty before letting them board their plane. They are non-EU. I assume that particular border police officer was having a bad day; most police officers do not even check the number of days stayed in the country and they are happy to let go two old people fly out of the country. Consequently, if you are not EU, I would strongly recommend checking with the consulate. |
Re: Staying as a tourist after L permit expires Well, I left Switzerland 89 days after my L permit expired and I had no problems leaving at all. The man at passport control only asked if my permit was finished and I answered yes. Good luck to the rest of you! |
Re: Staying as a tourist after L permit expires Please is this possible? I am a non-EU from Africa |
