carte de legitimation at age 25

Hi all,

I've been living in Geneva since age 19 (I'm 22 now). As one of my parents works with the UN, I hold a carte de legitimation. I understand that I will have to eventually give up this residence permit when I reach age 25.

But supposing I get into either of the following situations at age 24:

situation 1: I get a job in Geneva with an NGO
situation 2: get a PhD post at the University of Geneva

What kind of permit will I get, and what will happen to that permit when I reach age 25?

Thanks very much for your advice!

By the way, I hold a non-EU passport.

Hi

I am not a specialist for residence permit sorts. But, in my opinion:
- A student permit if you get a PhD post at the University of Geneva.
- A B category permit if you get a job.

It's not exactly that straghtforward as there are special prescriptions introduced with the WTO domiciliation package deal governing this particular situation.

I understand that, as long as your parents enjoy the privileges and immunities of carte de légitimation in Switzerland and you are under 25, you can get Ci work permit to get access to Swiss labour market: (http://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/fr/home/...ir/mandi1.html).

I have to say that it is not clear to me what happens with this permit after the age of 25, but your parents can enquire with the host country liaison office in the UN to get most accurate information.

Re: carte de legitimation at age 25

Hi!!

I dont know how it works now. But when I turned 25 the canton where I live offered me C permit when I returned carte de legitimation.
But then again I had this card since when I was 7 years old even though I attended schools outside switzerland and only came back during school vacations, but my parents had registered us to the commune we lived. I think if your parents have registered your family or you to your commune which most of the UN employees dont tend to do , then it shouldnt be a problem for you to get a permit after you return this card and If your parents are still residents here.

Re: carte de legitimation at age 25

thank you so much for all the useful information.

I also wanted to ask:
- if I want to apply for Swiss citizenship (current passport is non-EU/non-US), will the years spent on my carte de legitimation and permit B (let's just say student) count towards the 12 years, or will I need another type of permit?
- if I spent 10 months plus another 11 months (those two periods not being consecutive) outside Switzerland while on a carte de legitimation, do I have to add up another 21 months to the 12 years to be eligible for citizenship, or as long as I have my carte de legitimation for the period I am out of Switzerland, it does not matter?

Thank you so much!
