Live in Basel, work in Germany?

Hello folks,

I'm interested to know if anyone has any thoughts on living in Switzerland but working in Germany - seems to me most people do it the other way round (so I'm assuming there's some good reasons for this).

My wife is Swiss, so wants to stay in Switzerland, and I think I'd also prefer to live here too. Seems like taxes are higher in Germany, but the pay is relatively lower. I am looking at a reasonably good job in Freiburg (DE), but living in Basel.

Suggestions or advice of any description welcomed!
Cheers.

Well you foudn the reasons already why people usually do it the other way around:
Germany:
lower salaries, higher income tax, lower costs of living

Switzerland:
higher salaries, lower tax, higher costs

So living in DE and working in CH:
High salary, low tax, low costs

Living in CH and working in DE:
Lower Salary, higher tax, high costs...

Re: Live in Basel, work in Germany?

Thanks Treverus.

I gather from your reply that I'm taxed based on where my income comes from, not based on where I live, is that right?

Re: Live in Basel, work in Germany?

In principle: Yes (my aunt used to live in Konstanz and work in Switzerland)

Although live is not that easy and there must be some special stuff to take care of when working across the border... but I am sure there are some people here who know the details...

Re: Live in Basel, work in Germany?

Hi,

I know this thread is old but I'm now in the same situation and looking for advice.

I currently have a Swiss B permit, live in Basel, work part time, and am unmarried (but live with my partner who works here too).

I now want to apply for a temporary (15 month), part time (75%) job in Freiburg.

I assume that I can't stop working in Basel altogether and remain living here, given that the B permit is job-contingent. So my questions are:
Does the cross-border G permit work both ways?
Could I legally work in both Germany and Basel, e.g. 4 days in Freiburg, 1 day in Basel.

I know this would be a tax nightmare, and I know living in Basel and working in Germany is "the wrong way round" financially, but I'm interested purely in the legal aspects.

Thanks in advance for any information or pointers in the right direction!

Katie
