Non-EU permit renewal on basis of ALV claim?

Hi all,

The last few days the mix of situations have conspired to give me a lot of headaches, and so I have come to the Oracle, as it were.

Situation summary:
Non-EU national, relocated to Zurich in Aug 2008 for employment, with EU national spouse. Both work contract and L-permit due to expire at end of year. Since relocation, found that the spouse's employment is much harder than expected, due to language, industry and economic climate. Would prefer to remain in Switzerland and work but is unsure whether contract will be renewed. Would prefer to find a better professional fit.
Lastly, expecting a firstborn in mid-November.

Facts gathered so far:
- Upon normal contract expiry, I would be eligible for ALV payments.
- Upon expiry of permit, those with remaining ALV payments will get their permits renewed.

Would like to find out for certain:
- Would the permit and contract expiry due end of year pose any difficulty in staying in Switzerland with ALV assistance if another contract can't be arranged to commence immediately after the current one?
- Without her obtaining employment, given the circumstances render it a near impossibility until February next year, is it at all possible for my spouse to obtain a permit based on EU citizenship?
- If there are no legal possibilities to remain in Switzerland, do we have to leave before permit expiry? Or is there a 'leave-by' period after permit expiry?

Thanks for your advice.

In principle L permit holders aren't entitled to unemployment benefits.
