Working in Geneva - Residence in Zurich, is it feaseable?

Hello Everybody,

I've just registered to the forum, but I've been a hidden user for a long-time... I've to say it's really excellent!

I'm an EU citizen with a B permit. I've been living and working in Geneva for the last two and half years. My girfriend will move to Zurich and I would like to get my residence registered at her address, in order to get a series of advantages (first of all a much lower tax rate ...) . However, I'll carry on working in Geneva. Do you think it is possible? If so, what am I supposed to do? To whom should I announce my willingness to change residence?

Thanks to all,
J.

If you buy an General Abonnement for the trains, you won't pay much more than if you just had a local season ticket.

But you do know that it takes three hours each way?

I think you should tell your girlfriend first.

And that's not including the time it will take you to get to Zürich HB from home, from the Geneva station to your workplace, and the opposite direction in the evening.

I can see 7-8 hours of your day being eaten up with just commuting.

Edited to add that I haven't included the waiting time for various Public Transport services.

I know someone who lives & works in one city but is registered in another for lower tax reasons (no, not me). So yes, possible. You have to get your name on the contract of the Zurich address and then sublet of someone else in Geneva (which is what I presume you want to do right?). Deregister at the Geneva authorities and reregister at the Zurich one, once you have an appt contract. I assume you dont really want to commute. That would be crazy.

Re: Working in Geneva - Residence in Zurich, is it feaseable?

Welcome to the Forum.

What exactly are you planning to do?
a. Live in Zürich and commute each day? (see DB's post)
b. Spend the weekends in Zürich with the girl friend, retain your flat or move to a smaller one in Geneva during the week. (I think for tax purposes you can make this stick if you prove that your friends and social life are in Zürich and Geneva is merely your place of employment) Shorrick, where are you?
c. Work and spend most of your time in Geneva but tell the authorities you are living in Zürich? (presumably GF visiting you in Geneva)

I'm pretty certain the Parish offices will need to know - but without knowing what exactly you intend to do it's very difficult for anyone to give you the answers to your questions.

Good luck - hope it works out.

Re: Working in Geneva - Residence in Zurich, is it feaseable?

i did something similar VD/ZRH.

B permit 2 apartments??

all my expenses (_in_ ZRH in my case) were tax deductible too!

i would recommend though that you MOVE to ZRH and then find a smaller place for your self in GVA. if the GVA tax people get the slightest feeling you are doing the tax dodge they could hammer you for it. although ZRH/GVA is obviously a madder thing to do compared with lausanne/GVA

Re: Working in Geneva - Residence in Zurich, is it feaseable?

Hi Guys, thank you very much for all these precious info in such a short time.

My idea is actually not to commute. I'll spend the weekends in Zürich keep my flat (actually my room) in Geneva in which I'll stay during the week.

The Zurich flat contract will be definitely at my and my girlfrined's names.

However the Geneva flat is at my and my flatmate's manes and I don't know if this could be a problem.

Shall I prove to the Geneva's authorities that I'm commuting eveyday? Or is it fine to have a flat in both cities but prove that my "life" (apart from work) is established in Zurich?

Thank you so much!

stuff ...
so lets see, to do what you want you have to:

BOTH de-register from GVA and then BOTH register in ZRH. this transfers your permits to ZRH.

then _you_ need to register in GVA as a weekly resident i.e. you go home to ZRH at weekends. now the fact that you want to stay in the same apartment WILL make the GVA authorities suspicious and they will ask questions. the fact that your 'girlfriend' lives in ZRH will probably not be enough! wife and kids would be different, but girlfriend hmmmm?

i would suggest you get proper advice from a permit/residence lawyer and/or a tax lawyer.

[this assumes that your girlfriend is also EU!]
