Does a EU citizen require a work visa to enter Switzerland to be able to work?

Dear All,

Probably this question has already been asked before but I am in a bit of a panic after having checked the Swiss embassy website in Belgium.

I am a Spanish citizen (and therefore I hold a EU passport) who has been living in Belgium for the last 3 years. I have been offered a job in Switzerland and I am moving there in 1 1/2 months.

I have always thought that, as a EU citizen, I did not need a visa to enter Switzerland. However after checking the Swiss Embassy website in Belgium (http://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/en/home/reps/eur/vbel/ref_visinf/visbel.html) I can see that they state that for stays longer than 3 months and if your intention is to work in Switzerland you need a work visa to enter the contry. And the worst part: this visa needs to be applied at least 2 months in advance! (accompanied by a very extensive list of documents). It does not really make a distincion between EU or non-EU citizens.

Can anyone tell me if this is necessary or if I have misunderstood the rules?

Many thanks in advance,
Spanish mover.

Scroll down to the box entitled "Similar Threads", you'll probably find the answer there as this has been asked before on the forum.

Yes, you do need a work visa to work here in Switzerland. I'm wondering why the company that offered you the job didn't discuss this with you since they are the ones that have to apply for your work permit, and prove that no other Swiss is capable of doing your job....

Re: Does a EU citizen require a work visa to enter Switzerland to be able to work?

Hello again,

Thanks for the answers. I am extremelly confused because the information on the Swiss embassy website and the one given by my company is different. I have already contacted my company and they have confirmed that I do not need to apply for a visa to enter Switzerland. However they have stated to me that once there I will need to register at the Canton with my work contract and my EU Passport.

So then my question, do I need to apply for this work visa here in Belgium or do I need to do that at my canton once in Switzerland?

Thank you again.

Re: Does a EU citizen require a work visa to enter Switzerland to be able to work?

Hello again,

Apologies for not having checked all the information before posting the question. I was concerned of having missed some very important thing in the whole hassle of moving countries.

I found the answer in the following link: http://www.bfm.admin.ch/bfm/en/home/...04.html#a_0004 where it is stated that as a EU 17 national I will have to register with the communal authorities at my place of stay and apply for a residence permit within 8 days of my arrival in Switzerland and before actually taking up work.

However all necessary steps for obtaining the work and residence permit can be taken after arrival in Switzerland.

I hope this is useful for someone else. Thanks for the posts.

you can:

show up in CH on Sunday, start work on Monday and go to the local commune Tuesday (or within 8 days) with a copy of your new signed work contract and passport and you are done. then the rest will follow from there.

How does it tally with the obligatory showing up at the Swiss border when one enters Switzerland to start working there? I am in the same situation - I must show up in my office on Monday, but thought I have to arrive on Friday in order to register with the Swiss authorities. If I fly I would be more than happy to arrive on Sunday evening.
Or does the working day rule only apply when one comes by car and needs to register it on the Swiss border?
Any tips?
Thanks!

No need for that unless you intend importing your vehicle. Even then, you don't have to do it when you first enter the country.

what swissbob said! things have gotten very easy since october last year (2008) for EU'ers. unless you have to declare personal effects at the customs, my previous post stands.
