After an L permit expires

Hi.

My L permit will expire shortly, after having been here two years. Renewal is not likely. I am a US citizen.

I have two questions:

* How soon will I be required to leave the country after the expiration of the permit?

* Can I extend the time I am here by enrolling in a school and taking classes (without working)?
