how many months can we be away from CH [Switzerland] with the B Permit?

Hello All,

Does anyone know how long one can stay outside Switzerland as a B permit holder? I am not sure if there is a time limitation or can one just come back as long as her/his B permit is still valid.

My wife is planning to go back to our home country and stay there for over 6 months, we are not sure if she can do that with a B permit.

Many thanks!!

Re: how many months can we be away from CH with the B Permit?

I am on an non-EU B Permit and left for 5 months last year.

I was away January to May and my B-Permit is renewed yearly in November. I had no probelms renewing the permit last year. One of my flatmates also left for a similar timeframe and was actually able to claim RAV on his return.

I did keep my address in Zurich whilst I was away though and returned to the same company to work. I would imagine that officially I should have informed the Kreisbüro, but thought that it would have caused me to many hassles. I guess I got away with it.

Depends where you are staying. As she is your wife and I assume here perhaps wrongly that you work and are staying then her permit will remain valid as it is attached to yours. However if it expires in the mean time she will need to reapply. But this will not really be a problem.

Re: how many months can we be away from CH with the B Permit?

for a B permit I think there is a limitation on how much time one can be away from switzerland. i think she's not supposed to be out of switzerland for longer than 6 months....better ask the Fremdenpolizei. If her B permit is going to expire during her absence i think to reenter switzerland she has to get a visa ( depending on what passport you're wife is holding of course).

Thanks joeyying, this demonstrates an important point - it's always a good idea to go to these official websites to check this type of information. One should be careful to act on unqualified advice given on the internet. If a B permit holder had decided on the basis of some of the posts on this thread to leave Switzerland for more than three months, they may have lost their permit.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that this forum is not just for German speakers, and that there are visitors not just from other countries but also from the French and Italian parts of Switzerland as well. Please avoid the use of German words and acronymns. Many people don't understand what RAV means (unemployment benefits) for example.

Please consult the language policy for further details. I've also changed the "CH" in the subject line to "Switzerland" - it's not possible for the search function to search on two-letter words. Please remember to try to spell out the word in full, especially if in a thread subject.

Actually no, it's not new, it's been like that as long as I can remember. 6 months is for a C permit. The information is available on the various government websites, always has been.

Um, Why not call them? With a B permit you can be away from Switzerland for a maximum of 6 months. However, it is only 3 months without informing them first that you intend to be away. With a C permit this limit is raised to 2 years... Again with permission after registering it with them first.

I'm afraid you'll have to do that yourself - the offices in Zurich are called Kreisburo, and which one you need to contact depends on which one you registered with (in other words, which part of Zurich you live in). I'd suggest the phone book or calling directory assistance.

What I was actually saying is the correct answer is 6 months and come to think of it I think you can even extend this to 12 months. Anyway here is the website with the links... http://www.migrationsamt.zh.ch/inter.../de/links.html

And of course the phone number you are wanting...

How many months can L dependent permit holder be away from Switzerland?

Hello,

Does anyone know how long one can stay outside Switzerland as a L permit holder? I understand rules are different than B permit holders.

My wife is on dependent L permit and plans to be in home country for 2.5 months, we are not sure if she can do that with a L permit.

Thanks in advance.

Regards
Kumar

Slightly different angle on this question. I have a C-permit, how many days per year do I have to be resident in Switzerland to keep it? I'm planning to study in the Uk but want to based in Switzerland.

I believe you can study outside of the country and still be considered
resident here....

Re: how many months can we be away from CH [Switzerland] with the B Permit?

Like Kumar and Craftylucy, I'm also curious about leave times for L, B and C permits, and importantly, **how are they enforced?? Is it only dependent on the honor system of going to the office and registering your plans? Or do they check stamps in the passport? Just curious...

Sure, one can find all the official answers on the canton websites, but the actual practices aren't addressed, if you know what I'm sayin'...

Pretty good question.

First part, they know you left as your landlord and or medical insurance company informs them - if you maintain a residence and continue your health insurance payments and pay your taxes in Switzerland then perhaps they wouldn't find out .

Second part, it appears in practice to be quite flexible and determined at the local community level although they may have to refer the case upwards for approval. I know of one USA guy who officially left for just under 4 years and on returning was reissued his C permit. Nice .

Edit: He had been here for 17 years previously though.

Re: how many months can we be away from CH [Switzerland] with the B Permit?

Very interesting... So, say someone:

1) Owns a little flat, so no landlord involved. Mail is forwarded.
2) Is willing to carry Swiss health coverage. Question - is it possible to maintain US health coverage as a US citizen when requesting/ holding L, B and C permits?? Would that satisfy the CH health coverage requirement?
3) (I have other questions about the tax issue but will save for other posts).

Looking for creative ways to switch a US residency with 2 CH visits a year into a CH residency with 2 US visits a year, while maintaining nice, well paid job in US that can technically be done from anywhere in the world.

Welcoming direct PM conversation if it's more appropriate.
