Is it possible to get a B-permit without working?

Hi everyone,

Want to hear if anyone can give me some advise on the Swiss permit situation. I am currently working in Geneva - living in Lausanne and have got the L-permit. Since I am a contractor my L-permit will run out together with my contract in the end of October.

However I would like to stay in Switzerland - but might not want to work for the rest of the year since I have saved some money to just enjoy the country and learn some French. Do anyone know if I can do that and what I need to do with the permit situation?

I have seen somewhere that you can actually apply for a B-permit if you are paying to a Health insurance and have enough money in the bank to take care of yourself - but do anyone know what the figures are for enough money?

Any feedback or advise on this is very much appriciated.

Kind regards
Annette

I don't believe this exists - there is a sort of tax exile permit where you pay x amount fixed tax and live in CH without working here - probably some millions required there.

Once your permit expires maybe you can come back / stay on a tourist? That should give you up to 3 months.

I had to sign a personal guarantee (for 15,000 CHF)for my partner to get him a B permit. Once that was done, it was easy to get it.

Yes, but that's a different situation altogether.

Sounds interesting! I take it you have a B permit and your partner is EU as well? Is this personal guarantee some standard form you can sign and give to the immigration office? Am wondering since I have a B permit and my girlfriend only an L, since she has not found a job yet.

Really. As an EU stand alone jobseeker you can register and get an L permit for 6 months and then renew once for another 6 months.

Re: Is it possible to get a B-permit without working?

I have a B permit, recieved it before I reported whom my employer was (non suisse company), i.e. stating any income nor personal wealth.

I honestly dont know the differences between the permits but getting the B permit was just a walk to Gemeindehaus and a fill out a paper.

Re: Is it possible to get a B-permit without working?

The only way to get a b-permit without working is to show you have 30K CHF savings. Or get someone with a b-permit to commit to cover you for that much so you don't claim benefits.

Even then, its a case by case its not 100% sure you will get anything.

Thank you everyone for all the good advice - I will see how I can move on with this - guess it could be a difference from canton to canton how easy it is to get a B-permit.
