Is the permit B valid for travel to UK?

Hey guys!

Hope you can answer this question for me:

I am currently a student at the university of Lausanne and will hopefully soon get my residence permit (Permit B). I'm from Ukraine and naturally have a Ukrainian passport and it's always been a hassle for me to get visa's when I travel. So I was hoping that with this Permit B I could virtually travel in any given Schengen state. I've been told that's possible.

The thing is, I want to travel to the UK for holiday in a month or so and I was wondering if I am required to apply for a UK visa even though I'll have this Permit B. Someone at the Foreign Affairs Office in London told me that if one has a visa for a Schengen state, then the UK recognizes it and you essentially do not require a visa for entry. How far is that true? Cz I obviously DO have a swiss visa glued in my passport (which btw says one entry only and has "Suisse" written on it and not "Schengen" :S ) and will get my Permit B.

This sounds all confusing to me! :/ It would be much appreciated if someone could give me some sort of anwser!

Merci! =)

UK is not a Schengen state. You will most probably need a visa to enter. You can check it here.

Whilst the UK is not covered by Schengen, it is EU.

Have you tried contacting the Consulate in Geneva? They should be able to deal with FCO queries.

Having been through this, you will indeed need a visa to travel to the UK

Good luck!

Re: Is the permit B valid for travel to UK?

According to this, you usually need a visa to transit airside as a Nigerian.
https://www.gov.uk/government/public...-transit-visas

It then goes on to say that you are exempt from getting a transit visa if you have a "Swiss common format residence permit". I assume this means you need a credit-card format B permit.

What's confusing you? You're not entering the UK, you're transiting airside.

I can see why you'd be nervous, but ... experience from years ago doesn't count. I believe the rules changed in 2014. You could always phone BA - they should know as their computer system has all the visa rules. Any issues and they won't let you board the flight to LHR in the first place.!

Re: Is the permit B valid for travel to UK?

It's quite clear. If you hold a credit card style Swiss residence permit then you don't need a visa. All non-EU Swiss permits are this type so you will have no problems transiting through the UK.

Re: Is the permit B valid for travel to UK?

I'd say you do need a transit visa based upon this info because you hold a Nigerian passport and a Swiss B Permit is not a valid form of ID to enter the UK.

need visas to enter or transit the UK.

Sorry Adrian, but this is risky info to give out on a forum in case someone takes it as gospel.

When the ash cloud happened, dozens of business people ended up in police cells because they didn't have transit visas and found themselves stranded at the airport.

Please read further down your first link which comes from the UK government itself.

"Nationals of the countries shown in RED (underlined) above need a visa to transit AIRSIDE unless they hold one of the following:

(iv) a valid common format residence permit issued by an EEA state or Switzerland;"

It's quite clear no visa is needed.

Well that's unusual and I don't recommend everyone who can transit airside without a visa get one just in case a volcano erupts. Same issue with people flying to the UK from, I forget where, which did an emergency landing in Poland. All the passengers without Schengen visas had to sleep in the terminal. That's life and one takes risks.

It's clear. Swiss residency permit (cc style) is vaiid for airside transits for Nigerian citizens, and as these are BA flights one doesn't even leave the terminal let alone the airport.

I thought my first response was clear enough; if people choose not to believe it then fine, get a visa. I've lost interest.
