My wife is Spanish. Presumably it would be easier/quicker for the OP to get a permit if her husband is Swiss.

Hi there. I am an American married to a Swiss citizen. He and I were married in America and actually started the permit B process from the states. However, we had already planned to move to Switzerland and had both of our flights booked for the move, our house packed up and shipped....and I was still (after 3 months) waiting for my entry paperwork. Eventually we said, 'whatever...the tickets are non-refundable' So I entered the country on a tourist visa, went to the commune, begged for forgiveness and 2.5 months later received my B permit. The long wait for us was actually that the Swiss Consulate in LA took quite awhile to submit our marriage registration paperwork so that we could get our 'Certificat de Famille' which is necessary to be issued a B permit for family reunification. It was a stressful and annoying period of time but in the end it all worked out.

To answer your question, yes...you can come here and get married on a tourist visa if your husband plays nice with the commune and the canton folks. Ask for forgiveness and play dumb. They understand love and such.

As for the other advice you are receiving...unfortunately you opened that can of worms. Therefore: please note that marriage is hard in the best of circumstances. Adjusting to a new country is hard in the best of circumstances. Doing both at the same time when you aren't completely sure that you would get married under different circumstances at least deserves some consideration. One more thing....love, unfortunately, is rarely enough to make a marriage work.

Best of luck to you!

I just moved here from Ventura, CA. In Canton Zurich, we went to the zivilstandsamd and filed the request to get married. After calling the imigration office, they suggested that we marry while my tourist visa is still valid, rather than applying for the L permit. Once you apply for marriage you have 3 months to do it. If you want more time, you can get the L permit which gives you 6 months. best advice is to get your swiss partner to talk with someone at imigration for their opinion. I would also suggest getting married in which ever country you want to live.

Thank you everyone for your help. The reason I posted is because I DO NOT in any way want to do something illegal and I don't want to be away from my boyfriend again for an extended amount of time. Has any Americans/Swiss done this marriage on a tourist Visa this year?

Okay, here is the thing. Once you have truly lived in Switzerland for awhile you will begin to understand that although the Swiss are "by the book" in theory, the reality is that every case is different. If you, "DO NOT in any way" want to do something illegal...then you should stay put and go through the process of being separated from your boyfriend and dealing with the Swiss Consulate in New York. It is, truly, the only "real" legal way to do it. If you want to deal in terms of reality, you can come back and get married on a tourist visa and ask for forgiveness. Alternatively, you can send your boyfriend all of your documents (make sure they are translated into German/French/Italian) and he can go to the commune and fill out the appropriate marriage application. Once it has been approved you can come on over and get married. After that, you can apply for your residence permit B...although realistically it will be a concurrent application.

Good luck!

No one here is trying to NOT give you information. We're just telling you what our experiences are.

My boyfriend and I are getting married next weekend in our Canton on my Tourist Visa. It wasn't hard..now, I just have to get a residence permit.
