How long can you stay out of CH if you have a student visa?

A friend of mine from Colombia has a B permit for students. He is now writing his final dissertation and he went back to Colombia. How long can he stay there? The permit is not expiring soon but he wonders if has problems coming back if he stays there for awhile...
