Change of Car Registration

Hi

I hope this is in the right place, if not apologies. Come February I will have lived here a year, and as far as I gather I will have to get my licence plate changed. Does anybody know how I go about this , how long it takes and how much it will cost ?

Thanks in advance

Re: Change of Car Registration

$1'000'000

I assume you're talking about importing the vehicle? You're presenting far too little information.... like

- did you own the car for at least 6 months before you registered here?
- what market is the car from?
- make and model will help

HTH

Re: Change of Car Registration

should be little to no sweat - it's EU, old and you simply need to talk to a garage to ensure it's spotless and no modifications must be done.....

Re: Change of Car Registration

search the forum, plenty of info. importing the car and changing plates is not the same thing. and yes you have to exchange your licence to a Swiss one no later than a year after arriving.

Re: Change of Car Registration

You have to exchange your licence for a swiss one after a year as well as swiss plates for the car.

Re: Change of Car Registration

Plenty of info in this forum about this topic.

Basically it is not as complicated as you read on the strassenverkehrsamt zürich Wbsite

Driving licence:

-> Download the Form from their website to apply for the Swiss Driving liscence (... yes you need to give up your current one, but this means maybe replacing an old and ugly photo with a better one. great !...)

-> Go to any Optician and get your eyes checked (the one I went even refused to charge me for his effort )

-> Pay a visit to the strassenverkehrsamt zürich and apply to replace your licence. Beware they do take your current one away (I got my new one in less then 24 hrs )
While you are there, take an apointment for the inspection/import of your car.

Importing car:

-> If you will cross borders soon (if not you might wanna go shoping in DE), stop there and simply explain you want to import your car. You fill some forms and pay some 20 CHF. The whole thing takes max. 15 mins

-> Get an apointment at some Garage to clean the engine and prepare it for import. Call more then one garage. One said he'll charge me 700,-CHF the other one 160,- for the same service and even cleaned the car.

-> Go to the apointment at Strassenverkehramt. Easy procedure (as long as your car has no real poblems). At the end you get your new number (I even asked to choose mine). Keep in mind that german frames for car plates is not suitable for swiss ones. You might wana go back to some garage. They often replace the frame for free.

-> Here is the only bad part... you do get a bill for the import/inspection/plate for aprox. 400-600 CHF

Good luck!

Re: Change of Car Registration

Good advice from TAE up there

Just two notes about the licence swap. First, get a photocopy of your Irish licence before surrendering it. If you're asked to produce your driving licence before you receive your Swiss licence, this may suffice (along with your grovelling explanation). It took the BL MFK 2 weeks to send my new licence.

Secondly, for the benefit on ex-non-EU residents reading this thread, please note that your old licence is only destroyed/cancelled if it is an EU licence. Australian and, as far as I'm aware, other non-EU licences are returned (with a tiny (removable) sticker stating that the licence is not valid in Switzerland). This may vary by canton -- correct for BS and BL.

Naturally, there will be fees -- CHF 10 levied by the Gemeinde for handling the driving licence conversion (that's peculiar to BL) and a total of CHF 140 to the MFK for the shiny new Swiss licence. But at least it's valid for life.

Not sure why you seemed so surprised that you'd need to get a Swiss driving licence ... this isn't Ireland, or even the EU.

Good luck with the whole process, it isn't difficult, just time-consuming.
