Married additional tax allowance [for withholding tax]

Hi,

Wondering if anyone knows of how to apply for the married additional tax allowance which came into effect 2009 so that married couples are no longer taxed (discrimanted against) as double earners?

Is it just the case of registing your married status and the tax office sending a new tax tariff notification to the employer, or if an application needs to be made.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Diana

Re: Married additional tax allowance

Hi,

Yes, some info at the following links, but my Swiss driving instructor also told me about the allowance but he did not know how to claim it.

http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/politics/internal_affairs/Married_couples_to_enjoy_tax_breaks.html?cid=54875 36

http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/politics/internal_affairs/New_Year_heralds_legal_changes.html?cid=6341574

Only problem is the above links advise about it but no info on how to get it.

Thanks

Re: Married additional tax allowance

I'd have thought it would be incorporated into the 2009 tax return or Quellensteuer? My Quellensteuer tables date from 2004 and I don't know if there are more recent ones because I don't employ anyone on Quellensteuer but it would be logical?

Re: Married additional tax allowance

Hi,

I thought the same, but I got married in October 09 and the company has used the 2009 Basel Stadt tax tables as married, double earners and our tax has been greatly increased, which leads me to suspect that the allowance has not been taken into account on the tax tables.

Thanks anyway

Re: Married additional tax allowance [for withholding tax]

Fingers crossed, but on a slightly different matter not concerning the married tax allowance I have also found out some other interesting information regarding if you were married in the previous tax year.

Senerio - couple get married in July, only one person working, the person who was paying tax was paying single tax until month of marriage (which is greater than married and only one person working).

Most cantons will only apply the married, spouse not working from the month of marriage and will not backdate this to the beginning of the year so that they receive the benefit, but they can now claim for this by downloading the 'Antrag auf Korrektur' paper from teh sourtax internet.

The paper needs to be completed, with a copy of a current payslip, bank details and copy of the marriage certificate. I think the deadline for this year is 25 March 2010. Covering letter should state that they would like a tariff change due to getting married in 2009. Any overpayment will then be paid directly into stated bank account.

Hope this may help some people in getting this amount back.

But still, any help or info on the married allowance would be greatly appreciated.
