Could I leave the country without the B permit card......

Dear Members

I have a doubt, I got a B permit for work; in Mexico I received a one entrance VISA and on 4th Feb I went to register myself here in Basel and they gave me a letter but I still do not receive the official card.

My question is: could I leave the country (going to Mex) without the official card and just with the letter I already had? and the most important could I enter into the country again just with the letter and without the card?

As always thanks in advance for your help

Hi verdijua

if I'm right I think your B permit is just work related. For leaving and re-entering the country you need your passport or equivelent. I too have a B work permit but I need my UK passport to travel in an out of the country.

Hope this is helpful, if in doubt I would contact your consulate.

If you are non-EU and can't just use your passport to travel where you want to go (and need a visa usually) then you definitely need your permit...However, your local authority should be able to issue you a 'residency confirmation' document - a paper which has your name and address in switzerland, issued by your Gemeinde. This will be needed probably when you try to re-enter Switzerland...we used these to go to the UK and back - and we definitely needed them when we re-entered...because we entered Europe on a 'one way' (return journey) ticket...

Much more helpful SP, As a UK citizen, I've only had to wave my passport at the control and never needed a visa as such... Being married to a Swiss has only helped all other admin and integration!

A few years ago, I had the same issue in the canton Vaud: need to travel and work permit B not ready (in renewal process). I asked the "controle des habitants" (Einwohnerkontrolle in german) and they told me: make a photocopy of your work permit and travel with it. I was surprised to see that at the airport that the policeman barely controled the paper...when i asked he told me that he saw on the computer that my permit was in renewing process!

Unfortunately OP is not EU so he will need to have his permit, you can always call the people from working permit office (the name escapes me now sorry) and ask properly but I do believe you need the permit. It has not been a month yet so you also need a bit of patience I am afraid .

Go to the kantonal immigration office. They can issue you a Swiss re-entry visa. This is usually a multiple re-renty visa, and can be valid for 30 - 90+ days (depending on what you ask of them). There is no cost associated with this. This is standard procedure with the Swiss immigration authorities. Your gemeindehaus should be able to direct you to the right office to go for this.

You can also use the re-entry to go shopping across the border and return back to switzerland. I have done this multiple times during the last 10 years.

Good luck (you should not need it in this case ).

Regards,

I second this suggestion. This is exactly what I did when I had to exit the country while my permit was getting processed. However, in canton BS it costs 90 or 95 chf, I forget the exact figure. It was worth it for my state of mind.

Re: Could I leave the country without the B permit card......

Thanks for the information, my real problem is with my girlfriend because in Mexico the embassy just give us a 1 entry VISA valid until 31 Mar, since she could no be definitely here, we were thinking that she could come and made her registration and leave the country; as soon as I received it, I could send it or maybe if I go to Mexico I could bring it with me, but We do not want to have problems when she leave switzerland because she is doing a Master degree in Mexico so she could not wait.

I'm not sure I completely understand. If it's your girlfriend's permit, she will have to pick it up herself - it's sent by registered letter the addressee needs to sign for.

Re: Could I leave the country without the B permit card......

Upss, I am sorry not to be so clear, Yes she is goint to come for one week ans made her registration and then she needs to leave the country. I was thinking that if the card arrives via post mail I could send it to Mexico so the next time she wants to enter to switzerland there is not to be any problem since the card is with her.

My question is if she could leave the country without the card?
