non-eu marrying EU citizen in switzerland.

Hi All,

I'd really appreciate any guidance on this. my bf is italian and we met in the US where we were both living and working.
because of the downturn and family issues, i had to leave and come back to india after 10 years in the US. my bf moved to switzerland with his employer to be closer to home (italy).
we now want to get married and be in the same country together. we have checked with the swiss consulate in mumbai and have understood the process.
however, we wanted to get married in switzerland. what documents do we need and what is the process? if anyone can outline the process or guide us, we'd appreciate it greatly.
any relevant links would also be great!

thanks a ton!

I've listed all the websites I've used in this thread and there's some information in my blog as well (e.g. here). This is general information, for more specific answers, contact the Registry Office (Service de l'Etat Civil in French) of your canton. They're usually very helpful.

You can also find lots of threads on the subject as well, using the tags and search function of the forum.

And congratulations!

Re: non-eu marrying EU citizen in switzerland.

No prob. We've just been to the Aliens' Police (Services des Etrangers) and turns out I can hopefully even stay till the wedding.

To get married in CH you'll need
- birth certificate (not older than 6 months)
- certificates of marital status
- certificates of address (a permit is sufficient if you live in CH)
- certificates of nationality
- certificates of previous marriages being dissolved
- papers of children
- passports
- permit
Papers in other than French, Italian or German have to be translated by an official translator after being stamped by the home country's Apostille (Foreign Secretary).

Then you have to take all these to the Registry (Etat Civil) and fill in a form (Demande en vue du mariage). You both have to sign it. Then you'll fix a date for an "interview" with the officials.

It is during that interview that you'll fix the date of the wedding, which will be in at least 10 days, but not more than in 3 months.

Fairly easy.

If you don't wish to marry in the canton of your residence, you can take your permission of marriage to another canton of your choice (to be specified in the forms). The super hot locations I've mentioned are booked well in advance, so you have to contact them early on.

I know for a fact that this process is 90% the same in every canton. What we did though was that we went to the Registry before getting the paperwork done and got a list of all the papers we would need. This helped a lot because the requirements vary according to nationality. I'd been told by others how they'd done it, but to make sure I think it's best to contact the Registry. The one in Geneva is really nice, btw.
