UK/EU citizen and Chinese wife

Dear All

I will be moving to Geneva for employment and I have a Chinese wife and 3 British children. My wife has a 2-year residence permit for the UK. Can she travel with me to Switzerland without a visa? My company of course will take car of my work permit.

Thank you.

Hello. I think for Chinese passport holder who has a over one year visa in UK can travel to Swtizerland without applying for a Visa. But if she stays longer, she needs to get a local residence permit.

Please double check. But that's what I know.

Give the Swiss Embassy a call to confirm

According to the IATA Travel Centre it looks like she will need a visa - but complete the online form yourself as you have the accurate details.

You don't need one and your company shouldn't be involved except to furnish you with a copy of your contract - take this to the local gemeinde within 8 days of arrival.

Re: UK/EU citizen and Chinese wife

I am originally from the UK and I have a Chinese wife. She has/needs a permit. You will need to prove (with documentation) that you are married, and they will simply issue her with one two.

In time she will lose the UK visa, and although Switzerland has signed the Schengen agreement, the UK is not included. This means although with a swiss permit you will be able to travel around Europe, France, Germany, Italy etc, you will need to apply for a permit to visit the UK for her. A pain in the a**e.

An application you would make through the British Embassy in Paris (not in person, by mail). Food for thought. Geneva is a great place in the meantime, would choose to live in France or Vaud ideally, since the tax rates in Geneva is the highest in Switzerland. You have subsidise all those UN people who dont pay any tax at all.
