Question about registering with Kanton

I arrived here last week for work, and am currently staying in a Hotel in Neuhausen.

I have my visa, but I need to register at the Kanton for my residency I guess I am still looking for a flat either in Neuhausen or Schaffhausen. I have not decided which town I am going to stay in. I should know this coming week sometime.

I also know that you are supposed to register within 5-8 days I guess, but I was told I am supposed to register with the Kanton that I will be living in.... What if I do not know this within the 5-8 days?

Am I supposed to register with Schaffhausen or Neuhausen?? My job is in Schaffhausen. I am not sure if that matters....

Any help on this would be great..

Thank You

Re: Question about registering with Kanton

You will need to register before you can rent a flat. Not sure if it's a legal requirement but the landlord will ask to see your registration before renting you the property, or at least the paperwork from the Gemeinde that you are awaiting your permit to be issued.

Re: Question about registering with Kanton

You can re-register with a different canton if you move anyway, so it's not like you'll be stuck in that place because you registered there

Re: Question about registering with Kanton

You can go to register and inform them you are in temp' accomodation and do not have a permenant address, they they give you a letter which extends time period for about 4 weesk as I remember. This letter was acceptable and allowed us to find an apartment, and then complete the registation process with the permenant address.

EDIT - We were in temp accom' in Zug kanton, and moved to ZH kanton, and in all the extension for full registration was about 6 weeks, and saves you multiple registration fees

Re: Question about registering with Kanton

If memory serves I think that you can be registered at your workplace until you have a permanent address. Not too sure how it is with studying.

Re: Question about registering with Kanton

You can register anywhere mail will get to you.

I registered in my temporary digs then went back 3 weeks later to re.register (same Gemeinde/council though).

It does seem a bit chicken and egg when you first arrive but just follow the rule: register on arrival, register on move...
