Attestation of foreign marriage certificate

Hi All,

Really hope someone can help, my wife has applied for a residency permit to join her spouse..
I am a British National living/working in Fribourg on Permit B.
My Mexican wife and I married in Mexico this year.
The canton are asking for a UK attestation of our Mexican Marriage certificate.

‘Une déclaration des autorités de la Grande-Bretagne – Ambassade en Suisse-selon laquelle la mariage, célébré au Mexique a été transcrit dans leurs registres'

We have already had the certificate apostilled by Mexican authorities but this wasn't enough for the canton
I called the UK General Register Office(GRO) but they said I can only deposit our marriage certificate and that it would not be registered/certified/recognised etc.
So how do we get the canton to accept the certificate? Should we ask the British Embassy in Mexico to somehow attest it/affadavit?

Appreciate any help anyone can provide. Thanks
Adam

Re: Attestation of foreign marriage certificate

My wife is German and I American. We married in the US.

We received an Apostille from the State of California. This was
more than enough for the Canton to recognize our marriage.

Different Canton different rules I guess. What does the UK
embassy in Bern say?

Re: Attestation of foreign marriage certificate

I called the British Embassy in Mexico but no joy really..
They thought it strange that the Swiss authorities should want the Mexican Marriage certificate deposited in the UK since they cannot certify a foreign document there. So I am back to the Cantonal immigration office tomorrow(along with a French speaking friend!) to make clear exactly what they think they want and even if they can show me evidence or an example of someone else's file in a similar situation.
I really hope all they want is:

-A French translation of the marriage certificate
..which a copy of is then certified/verfied by the British Embassy in Switzerland.

Fingers & Toes crossed for tomorrow!!

Re: Attestation of foreign marriage certificate

A similiar senario here with differences. My wife (Italian) and I (US) were married in the US and thus had US certificate.

When i was coming here on my wife's B visa, Swiss authorities asked for certificate or attestation that our wedding was registed in my Wife's hometown in Italy.

I contacted the Italian Consulate to register our marriage which is part of thier services, and was able to attach images of our certificate to an email. Amazingly enough within 48 hours, the Consulate sent me an email communication stating that it was being processed and that I would have to go to my wife's town to pic up the certificate. To make long story short, I was able to print that email communication out and send that to the Swiss authorities. That was sufficient for them and I got the same 5 year visa with work ability as my wife.

Of course this email had all the key contact information of the Italian Consulate person that was handling the case as well as the contact information of my wife's town hall who responded.

I have since provided that certificate. I suggest you use the UK consulate to do a similar service for you and have them show they are registering the marriage some how.

Parkadam, what seems efficient occasionally has still surprises up its sleeves. In my case, 15 years later, the consulate had the marriage paperwork, but the city had lost it, or never inputted it in their systems.

As for doing a DIVORCE transcription, that is a true and complete nightmare. I've been working at it since 6 months, and I hope to be done by November. Hope.

This is why the first stop to my wife's home town was her townhall to check up on that!

I WAS dealing with Italians after all, uffa!

Re: Attestation of foreign marriage certificate

Thanks for all the replies.
We got there in the end, turns out the immigration office didn't really know what they were asking. When I did present them with the translation(which was certified by the British Embasses as being a true copy of the original!) they said they couldn't accept it as it was a copy! So after some 'educating' they accepted it. Would have been far easier if we weren't married I think.
Thanks for all your replies anyway albeit years later!
