Can I Live Register in 2 Cantons?

Well I have a flat in Zurich but plan on studying in another Canton. I want to keep the flat in Zurich as it is cheap and register in the 2nd canton?

Anyone know about this?

Thanks

You register where you live. You cannot be registered in two places at once.

Re: Can I Live Register in 2 Cantons?

So I can't have a weekend flat in Zurich and weeday flat in another Canton?

The apartment house I live in, in Zurich as mainly used by people who stay there during the week and go back to their other homes on the weekend. It is studio...almost like a hotel type room.

???

Just testing the waters

Now that's a different question. My personal opinion is that it will be fine - but why not pop down to the office where you are currenly registered and ask them. I would think the worst that happen is you have to register in the weekday kanton and deregister from the weekend kanton.

Re: Can I Live Register in 2 Cantons?

yes, you can register in two Cantons - in fact, I think you are obligated to do so in such a case. It's a "Wochenaufenthalt"... my son, for example, is registered in St. Gallen where he studies (he is in a "WG" there) and he spends Monday - Friday in St. Gallen, is registered in St. Gallen (required) but is also registered in Canton Zurich (Kloten) where his permanent residence is (althoug he is only here on the weekends at most). He is then taxed in Zurich, not St. Gallen.
My neighbor is also registered in two Cantons, here is Zurich where she works during the week (and sleeps) and in Bern, where her "permanent" apt. is.
You need to go to your "Gemeinde" and clarify.
Hope this helps!

Re: Can I Live Register in 2 Cantons?

A member of my team was registered in both ZH and in his home town in SG, he paid tax in SG although he worked and spent the week in ZH.

I stand corrected - but your son is Swiss? I wonder if it is different for Swiss compared to temporary permit holders.

I know of at least one incident with an L permit holder where this was not allowed (he did it anyway and no-one bothered him).

Re: Can I Live Register in 2 Cantons?

You are absolutely right Swissbob!!!!- I completely forget that we are not only USA citizens, but Swiss as well (we all have dual passports) - and of course, registering in two Cantons is allowed for Swiss or persons with a C permit (or rather required under certain circumstances, hence my son's double registration) - but from my quick research on the subject, not allowed for other permit holders..... and Capuccino, considering your situation - discussed on the other thread, that you are on a soon-to-expire tourist visa - you are not even legally able to stay in one Canton, not to mention two. (Can NonEU get Visa to visit Germany in Bern?) -

I think you will have to sort out your residency status in one Canton before contemplating two cantons.

Good luck!

Re: Can I Live Register in 2 Cantons?

On my B permit it does not say I cannot do this, so maybe some B permit holders are allowed to use this method.
What I want to know is if I can choose myself where my main residence is, as I want it to be the weekday one, not the weekend one .

If you register in the second kanton and move in with someone, does their tax increase, like household waste tax and so on? Also, I have heard that if you become a wochen/wochendaufenthalter, you can claim many more deductions on your tax form. Anyone done this or know the details? (Travel deductions and the like??)
