Visiting multiple schengen countries as tourist

Hello there,

My in-laws are visiting us in Switzerland and would be staying with us for the maximum visa period. Further, they are also planning to visit my brother-in-law who is staying in Denmark.

Normally the visa is valid for 90 days during a period of 6 months with an interruption of 1month. My question is whether they can visit Denmark after the expiry of 90 days. Stay there for 1 month and then return to Swiss for the next slot of 90 days.

I have two options, not sure whether they are viable.

1) Is it possible to get a multiple entry visa from Swiss embassy mentioning the maximum period of stay is in Swiss and minimum period in Denmark. If this is possible then how long would be the visa duration whether it would be within 90 days or more.
Or
2) Can the visitors apply for Denmark and Swiss visa separately before starting their trip.

Is it necessary that for the re-entry to Swiss (after 1month) the visitors should return from non-schengen countries only?

If anyone has any experience with the above situation, kindly give your views.

Thanks

Denmark and Switzerland are both in the Schengen area.
The visa will be issued for the Schengen area and you can stay in the Schengen area for 90 days in 6 months. You will have to apply for a visa in Switzerland because this will be the main destination.

Re: Visiting multiple schengen countries as tourist

My understanding of the law is that the 90 days in 6 months is schengen wide. That is, moving from Switzerland to Denmark does not reset the counter, and your in laws would be illegal immigrants after the 90 days pass, even if they are "just arrived" in Denmark.

I think that you (or they) should investigate whether Switzerland or Denmark issue longer term visitors permits. e.g. here:

http://www.bfm.admin.ch/bfm/en/home/...sformular.html

they seem to indicate that you do need to have some reason beyond tourism to stay beyond 3 months. Since you say inlaws, perhaps they would qualify under the family reunification criteria?

It could be a mess though, good luck!

Normally the visa is valid for 90 days during a period of 6 months with an interruption of 1month.
The maximum length of stay in Europe for non European Union passport holders is determined by the Schengen accord and is currently limited to 90 days within any 180 day period. The important thing to note is that you may not leave the Schengen Visa area for a day and return to restart the 90 day clock. In other words, you must be absent from the Schengen area for at least 90 days in a 180 day period to be legal.

One i also faced the same issue. When checked with Swiss immigration they told that one can stay only 90 days in a span of 6 Months in any scenegen country, so it doesnot resets the counter at all. But in case you want a written confirmation , just drop a mail to the immigration and they will respond to your query.
