Dear All

I am a non-EU PhD Student who currently work in ETH Domain.I have been working for 2 years now and my contract will end end of next year. Currently i have B-permit with annotation Ausbildung mit Erwebstaetigkeit. My question is, when i finish my contract with ETH before i graduate can i still apply for B-permit to find a job and get an unemployment benefit(i pay unemployment insurance from my salary) while i am finishing my study?I will get my degree from other university in Switzerland. Please help!

If you are a student then you are not available for work and therefore no unemployment benefits.

I recently (June) read this news that could be a relief for many students in Switzerland without an EU Pass. Hopefully they will implement it soon and you'll be able to match the requirements.

I am registered as a student in Uni Bern but work as a scientist in ETH domain and got salary from my office. The student status is just because ETH domain cant provide me the degree when i graduate. It is a lil bit unfair isn't it if i pay my taxes and unemployment insurance every month from my salary but by the end of the day it will just gone. I intend to stay and find job in Switzerland after i graduate. Is it wise to ask this directly to Migrationamt?

Not really. Unemployment is for people looking for work. Once you graduate you may be entitled to something while you look for work buit while you are a student you are technically not available for work and therefore not etnitled to unemplyment benefits.

Of course, you should trust no answer excpet the one from the authorities.

It is already passed as law but has to be ratified - expected early 2011.

Before you get too excited, you should note that this will only allow you to stay in the country to seek an employment position, it does not say that you will actually get a work permit!!!

From what I have heard from our HR people, it still means that if an employer wishes to hire you he will still have to show that there is no EU or Swiss graduate available to take the position. In other words CH and EU graduates still get preference.
