[urgent] Quitting university..

Hi everyone..

Iím quitting university here in Switzerland, and I want to know how long I have till I leave country?
My permit is student B, and itís valid till Sep 2011. I asked university but they donít know. Foreignerís office also didnít give me clear answer.
I really appreciate if anyone had similar experience..

Re: [urgent] Quitting university..

Depends what your nationality/circumstances are. Non-EU will mean you have to leave, if not immediately, at the end of the usual 3 month tourist visa time.

EU would mean more options.

Just wondering how clear we can be?? Strange.. they are the one who should be able to give you the clear info..

Logically as the other post is mentioning, as long as you would like to stay as tourist...you should be subject to the normal staying limit...

Re: [urgent] Quitting university..

Visit your kreisburi/gemeindeburo and ask in person. Best way to find out.

In practice, you should be able to stay till your visa expires as your student card will be valid till then if you've updated it in Sep and I doubt the uni contacts the kantonal authorities to say you've de-registered. Of course, if you do the above, you will have alerted them and this won't apply.

If you're EU then you def have more freedom.

the only thing university told me was that they inform authorities that I'm no longer student..
and no I'm not EU citizen.. I cant stay as tourist.

But the problem is that I have to leave this country in minimum and maximum of 2 months from now.. and I donít know what will be my legal status in this period..
(are they (authorities) gonna break into my apartment or something like that?)

Re: [urgent] Quitting university..

As long as your B permit is still valid, you can stay. They will not call you to remove your permit unless you go and give that back to the authority.
So, you can stay until September 2011. After that period, you will become illegal here. Then, in your position right now, there is nothing to worry about.

Double confirmation.

Seeing that you live in Ticino, I would assume you go (or, rather, used to go) to USI. If that's the case, I can assure you that the "ufficio degli straneiri" (aka foreigners' office) has a clear policy with regards to student visas they have issued. As soon as the uni will send the document, officially confirming that you've dropped out, your immigrant status in the country becomes illegal.

Now, what you can actually try and do is get a limited-time visa (will have to be done in Bellinzona) which will buy you more time to get things organized and leave the country for good. You have to explain your tricky situation to the university and ask them if they'll be willing to provide you a support letter for that, explaining why is it that you need to stay in the country for a couple of weeks (a month, at best) more. In case you have already paid your tuition fee for the fall semester (September-February), they may be willing to help you out. Emphasis on the word MAY as nothing can be guaranteed at this point. Worth trying thou.

Good luck

I donít understand.. are you saying that authorities literally come to check if Iím still in the country? I donít own any property or car and my insurance is expiring anyway.. my bank account is almost empty so what difference does it make if I stay here illegally for couple of weeks? (Actually Iím just waiting to get my US visa)

Surely you can wait in your home country?

Oh no difference at all. Except that when leaving the country you may get caught and get a "deported from Schengen" stamp in your passport. Really insignificant... Good luck at the US border with that. I've heard they're very open-minded when it comes to potential illegal immigrants.

Re: [urgent] Quitting university..

I think the best place to obtain such information is at your Kreisburo (local office where you had to register yourself when you first arrived). You would have to de-register yourself and by doing so, you will be given the correct information as to when you have to leave the country etc...

Re: [urgent] Quitting university..

Why not apply for a Schengen tourist visa to make things easier? But I think you're wasting your time chatting with us. Just pop over to your district office that issued you your permit and explain the situation. They will be much more helpful to your situation that we can ever be.

Re: [urgent] Quitting university..

I registered to leave Switzerland before and no one came to check if I was still in the country. I am EU, btw.

But I had 6 months to de-register after my 6 month L permit had expired (I had L permits for 3 years)- this may be different for you.

I had to prove to them that I had paid all my taxes and that there were no claims against me for anything.

My advice to you is keep your Swiss bank account open. You never know when you can use it again and opening one from abroad is very difficult these days.

Except you're EU so whatever your experience is it is highly irrelevant.

Re: [urgent] Quitting university..

You will have to inform the permit office at your canton that you have quitted university and they will guide you.
Usually they will take back your permit and ask you to leave in a reasonable time if you are non-eu.
