some questions regarding Kreisburo registration

(I'm sure that these questions were answered beforehand, but I couldn't find anything about it ...)

My wife and I (with our 2 daughters and 1 cat) arrived to Zurich 2 days ago for post-doc contracts with ETH. The HR department of ETH arranged working visas for us and we are suppose to visit the local kreisburo in order to complete the registration process.

A couple of questions:

(1) Do we need to have an apartment rent contract when visiting the kreisburo? There is some delay with obtaining the actual contract (although we already live in the apartment).

(2) How much time does it take for the kreisburo to issue the registration certificate?

(3) In case the answer to question (2) is more than 1-2 days, can we get a temporary registration certificate for the time being? If I understand correctly, this certificate is practically the basis for anything in Switzerland (opening a bank account, subscribing to a mobile company, buying health insurance, etc), and we are really eager to get things going.

Re: some questions regarding Kreisburo registration

yuval,

I can only go by my own experience, when I first registered I was given an A4 sheet of paper to show if necessary that I was now a resident, the actual permit then turned up approximately 2 weeks later, I think you will find it common practice that you will be issued with a temporary permit whilst the proper one is made and sent to you.

OK, good, and could you use this A4 temporary permit to open a bank account etc?

Thanks,

Yuval

Re: some questions regarding Kreisburo registration

Yes it covers everything, when you goto the bank also take your employment contract as they may or will also require it.

You will need your rental contract as well to prove you have somewhere to live.

The temporary permit makes it so you can open a bank account but you will have to wait for your full pass to be able to get a credit card.

You will also need your full permit to get a mobile phone here.

We registered 1 October and are still waiting for our full permits.

Re: some questions regarding Kreisburo registration

I am also in a similar situation.
I am arriving in Switzerland shortly to start work. I sign my rental contract the day I arrive and need to open a bank account ASAP.
Do i need to make an appointment with the Kreisbüro prior to my arrival, or can i merely show up with my relevant documents?

Thanks,
- Simon

Re: some questions regarding Kreisburo registration

No appointment required at the Kreisbüro, but remember they may close or be sparsely staffed over the lunch period. They will require a copy of your lease agreement and if you are here to work, a copy of your employment contract.

You will receive a "Meldebestätigung für ausländische Personen" on the spot - this is normally sufficient proof of residential address for a bank to open an account. As mentioned above, any commercial transaction that involves the granting of credit (credit card, post-paid mobile phone, etc.) will usually require the full residence permit.

Length of time to get the full permit varies by canton - some are faster than others. Zürich took just under 3 months to issue mine, but when my wife and children arrived six months later, theirs took about 3 weeks. Probably fewer things to check with dependent family members. Anecdotally, I've heard that Zug often issues permits in less than 2 weeks.

Re: some questions regarding Kreisburo registration

I tried to find is on the forum but with no result.. does anybody know how to find out which kreisbüro you should register in? I'm actually just moving inside Zürich but I have no idea to which Kreis my new address belongs to (6 or 11? Apparently is near the limit so I have no idea!)

THINK ... ask your landlord, ask your neighbour, ask the Kreisbüro 6 or 11 ...
