| | Goodbye Leia (Had to put our ferret to sleep)
My son and I had a very sad day yesterday: we had to have our dear ferret put to sleep following a painful brain tumor.
The vet explained to us that in her experience these kinds of cancers are very aggressive and painful, and the physical state of our Leia was deteriorating very quickly...
So after 7 years of joys, cuddles and mischief, we had to say goodbye to our Leia... This was especially hard for my son who is only 4.5: he's always known our ferrets, and kept saying he was losing his best friend...
E en though we still have our male ferret, Caspi, as well as our dog and our hamster, the house is all empty without her...

Sorry to hear about your loss Mélusine, are you thinking of getting another ferret?

No probably not: a young ferret would probably be a bit too much for our remaining Caspi who's already 6 (a granddad for a ferret).
Ferrets are wonderful animals, but their capacity for mischief is impressive, especially when they are young, and it might be a bit too much with my second baby arriving soon...

Still sad to hear about Leia , but you still have the other pets around the house to distract you and your son a bit..its good he has something to fall back on.

Seems that the Ferret had a good run (a long life), and was loved the whole time.
At least you can be comforted that you did everything you could for your pet.
Condolences to you, your family, and the young bloke (especially).
It's never easy to have a pet put down.

For your son, you might want to read to him about the Rainbow Bridge. Can be comforting for the whole family and the imagery is great for children. http://www.petloss.com/rainbowbridge.htm
Sorry for your loss.

So sorry about your loss. I've had 3 ferrets over the last 20 years (none now) and I know how loving and fun and clever and amazing they are and still miss mine terribly.

I am sorry that you have had to say goodbye to your pet - it really is a sad day for you all.
I have never had a ferret but a friend did and they make wonderful pets..

I'm so very sorry, Mélusine.
Our pets quickly claim a piece of our hearts, they are such an integral part of our lives - saying good-bye is always very difficult.
Leia had a very good life with you and your son - may the memories of all the good times bring you comfort.
Thinking of you both at this sad time.

Sorry to hear that. It's terrible when your pets get sick, let alone have to be put down. We cried like babies when our hamstes died.

fduvall | | | | | Thanks for this link. It's very difficult to known how to answer a little child's questions about life and death. I'm not a religious person, but it would perhaps have been easier to have a 'ready-made' answer, type "she's with god in heaven now"...
