| | ferret owners, please help
Hello, I have posted a thread before moving to Switzerland asking how easy it is to get ferret food here. Boy, am I glad I brought some food with me for our first month here! The answers given to me from my previous thread made me think I would have no problem finding ferret food here in Switzerland. Wrong! Maybe it's my location? I am in Brugg. Local Qualipets have, so far, NOT carried any ferret food and their webstore does not have anything for ferrets.
The local Fressnapf in Baden does not carry any ferret food and according to their website, I can't get any delivered to Switzerland.
So, ferret owners of Switzerland, can someone give me a hint of where I can buy my ferret some food? I welcome someone to prove me wrong and point out a Fressnapf or Qualipet that does carry quality ferret food. |

I had that problem 18 years ago when we moved from philly to the UK with a ferret. I just searched through all the cat food labels and found one with the right protein level. I think it was about 36 to 40%??? Luckily more and more ferret products became available with time - so you could find things online from the UK and have it shipped - better than coming from the US. Good luck. ps. I'm in Basel but if you ever need a ferret sitter...........

I realize that all countries function differently when taking care of their pets. In the US, it is no longer recommended to feed cat food to a ferret. There are still things nutritionally missing. It's something I'll consider as a last alternative.

I was also going to suggest zooplus (you can use their French site, zooplus.fr, or their German site, zooplus.de). I used to use them all the time for my cats' IAMS food, until I found a local supplier just over the border in Germany. They're very reliable, their prices are competitive (much cheaper than Switzerland), and their shipping charge is reasonable.
It's always worth checking both sites before placing your order, as product prices and shipping charges are not the same (although I think all orders are eventually dispatched from their warehouse somewhere in Germany).
The only trouble I ever had with them was when I ordered large quantities of food. I suspect I fell foul of the Swiss customs regulations, and the packages were returned to Zooplus. They refunded all charges without any complaint. Lesson learned: I now order in quantities of 3-4kg at a time. Large orders (>20kg food) always seem to be stopped at the border. The smaller orders also help keep the price >CHF60, thus avoiding the VAT & admin charges.
Finally, it's always worth doing a web search to see if you can find a discount coupon. There's normally a 5% or 10%-off coupon floating around the interwebs, which more-or-less covers the shipping charges.

I don't speak any german so the french site really helps me out, but google translate has been my best friend for all things german.
I noticed the customs warning when I was getting ready to check out. Think I'll be fine with a 7.5 bag? I hope so. Probably in the future, we'll be crossing the border to do our shopping in person.
