Warning: stomach bugs epidemic for dogs

Hello everybody, and especially dog owners!

A little message of warning for you: it seems that there is an epidemic of virulent stomach bugs at the moment, at least in Lausanne!

My doggie Brownie came down with it, and suffered from severe diahrrea for several days. A trip to the vet revealed that there are many dogs with the same symptoms at the moment, and that it is very contagious!

Happily the medication our vet provided was very efficient, and Brownie is already feeling much better today. But please be careful if your dog catches a stomach flu: dehydration is dangerous, and can happen quickly!

There is a similar epidemic for humans too at the moment, but it's not the same virus (I asked)!

However, it appears some bacterial infections can be 'shared' between dogs and humans, so when in doubt always carefully wash your hands after touching your dog if he's sick!

Could you please post what your vet gave you? Would be useful for other dog owners.

My dog also came down with something 2 weeks ago (record 8 times out per night, freakin' nightmare) and has been ok since, but yesterday she had a bit of an upset tummy. Hopefully it's not round 2.

I actually got yelled at by one of my lovely neighbors who accused me of abusing my dog because I wouldn't let her play with another dog while sick and was pulling her away. Daft woman. :-S

Could anyone confirm if this only applies to the dogs because I'm twisting in 24 hour agonizing pain from gastric virus?

Re: Warning: stomach bugs epidemic for dogs

Our vet started with 2 shots for Brownie: one against nausea, and another against diahrrea.

She also prescribed pro-biotic pills, and a paste to swallow twice a day, and which contains pro-biotic and argile in order to 'solidify' the content of her tummy. She also sold us special cans of food to use for 2-3 days, very easy to digest and specific for dogs with tummy problems.

All that didn't come cheap - almost 200.- including the consultation - but proved to be extremely effective. She strongly recommanded the pro-biotics for on-and-off bouts of upset tummy.

And to be clear: there's TWO epidemics going on at the moment: one for dogs, and another one for humans - typical and recurrent every January-February, every year
