I would like to get a puppy!

For many years now I have had the desire to have a dog and in particular a west highland terrier.
I have done quite a bit of research, thinking, and evaluating my lifestyle, and have decided that I am in a position to have a dog, which would make me greatly happy!

I am searching for information from any of you who have gone through the process of adopting a west highland terrier puppy in the canton Vaud.

Can anyone suggest a breeder who they have had a good experience with?

Also, can anyone give me a ballpark figure on the cost of one of these dogs here in Switzerland (from a breeder)?

Any personal reflections and experiences with these dogs would also be appreciated!

I hope to add a new, happy member to my family and am ready for all the responsibilities a dog owner must develop. Thanks in advance for any advice and info!

Well done! Its the most rewarding thing in the world. Despite what others (responsability shirkers) have said, the routine of caring for a dog , in return for its unwavering affection ,is a small price to pay. On the serious side, DO make sure the breeder comes recognized by the authorities (check with the local animal rescue people or Tierspital maybe in Berne), on the lighter side, if you want to know who loves you more, your dog or your other half, then shut both of them in the boot of your car for an hour, and then see who is pleased to see you when you open it .

Re: I would like to get a puppy!

Shipsinbottles, are you a first time dog owner?

If so, have you already taken the (mandatory) SKN theory course? By law this must be done before you acquire your dog.

Be aware that all dog owners, regardless of experience, are required to complete the SKN practicle course within the first 12 months of ownership, with each and every dog added to the family.

Many of the questions you have asked will be answered here:
How to spot a reputable breeder

--

I would also urge you to consider adopting a homeless dog in need - there are often terriers and other small dogs - purebred as well as Heinz57 - looking for a home. Some insights to that process can be found here:

Adopting a pet from a Rescue Centre

---

Hope you find your new furry friend soon.

Re: I would like to get a puppy!

First of all, before any reputable breeders will entertain you now after the new BVET laws came into effect, you'll need to undergo the SKN theory course if you're a first time dog owner in Switzerland. Do a search on the forum - lots of information about them. I spoke to my dog's breeder not too long ago and the topic of the laws came up. "I will only put people who've completed the SKN theory course on my waiting list, same applies for alot of other breeders I know" - was her response.

This is the link to the terrier club in Switzerland:
http://www.terrierclub.ch/

All breeders of various terriers (from the Norwichs, to the Yorkies, to the Cairns, to the Westies) are all registered there and are part of the SKG (Swiss Kennel Club). Please, please please only get Westies from these breeders approved by the SKG as they adhere to high and very responsible standards of breeding. Their prices will not vary much from breeder to breeder as they are all a very close knit community. They will be happy to refer you to fellow breeders if they dont have a litter available.

Lastly, expect to pay anything from 1000 - 1500 CHF here, for a Westie. If you MUST go over the border, here's a thread I started sometime back about spotting a reputable breeder. Do keep these in mind when you are visiting breeders:

How to spot a reputable breeder

Good luck in your search. I love terriers and their temprement - cheeky, determined and hardy little buggers! ahhhh...! I have a Norwich terrier myself.

Just from a purely medical point of view....
Westies have alot of medical problems, in particular relating to their skin. I have lost count of the amount of Westie's that I have seen in Practice that have severe skin allergies and end up on very very expensive medication for life (google prices for Atopica). Please don't get me wrong Westie's are lovely little dogs but I am always so suprised when people who present with a Westie who is literally pulling it's fur out are have no clue how common this is. From a veterinary perspective it's like well duh... You have a Westie!
So please make sure you do your home work before buying one and seriously consider a good pet insurance! Otherwise though temperament etc they are lovely, sweet dogs.

Thank you for this info I have read they often have skin problems and this does concern me quite a bit.
I am happy to broaden my search here. The westie would be my dream dog, with their charming appearance, but I surely don't have my heart set on one.
Mostly, I am interested in a good companion. I have a lot of free time in my life now to own a dog and don't see my lifestyle changing too dramatically in the future. I would like a smallish dog, and it doesn't necessarily need to be full bred. Some of the best dogs I have been around were mixed.

Mostly, I want an good companion to add to my pack (family)!

I have had two long legged Jack Russels. A real handful as they are scatter brained for two years, but a challenge and a real dog. Not many medical problems. I trained mine not to yap at everything. I don't like the short legged fat ones.

Not wanting to be pendantic (ok, I do really) but you actually had Parson's Russels (long legs) not Jack Russels (short legs).

Indeed - but to keep the thead ot I agree with Itti that, as originally working dogs, Russels make one of the best pets. Huge dog in a small package, brave as anything, ultra loyal, and probably get a hairy one as our next doggy.

Re: I would like to get a puppy!

Good choice of dog!! When you get one look out for us walking our Westie Archie in the streets of Nyon!!!

The skin problems mentioned are reasonably common, but ours, and friends of ours, have had no such issues.

Ours is a great character, very playful and loving, loves cuddles and attention.

Re: I would like to get a puppy!

Well, it's been some time since I started this thread and five weeks ago my dream came true and we found our puppy!!! I'm glad we waited until we found just the perfect little girl, since she will be my companion for many years to come.

She is a wire fox terrier and a pretty uncommon dog here in Suisse so I've found, and I certainly know why! She's is one handful!! They've got an energy level that is non-stop and full throttle and it's just the perfect dog for me. I swear, I've even lost a couple pounds in the five weeks we've had her and am in better shape than ever! Since she's a dog needing a good 2 hours of walking a day we've even explored the area around Nyon and found it a dream world with little forests and paths leading every which way.

We'll be on vacation for the next two months, but if you see us around Nyon in June, say hi! She is great with other dogs and loves to play. Maybe this summer one of your young pups would like a playmate
So here she is:

I'd suggest a Labrador or a Jack Russell, so friendly and highly intelligent.

I love these little guys
