Dangerous grasses for cats

Yesterday I had to rush my cat to the emergency vet to remove a trapped blade of grass that was intruding into his wind pipe. He was dry retching, pawing at his mouth, wheezing and in obvious distress.

Basically he had eaten some grass growing at the base of a plant on our neighbour's balcony. This particular strain of grass has 100's of tiny hooks or hairs that make it very sticky and clingy, and this according to the vet is a very common occurance in cats. My poor boy had to be sedated and when the offending object was finally removed, in several pieces, they were covered in blood. This is really evil stuff that can anchor itself to anything, so just a note to watch out if you have cats. I do have special cat grass growing in trays on our balcony, but clearly he fancied something else that day
