Agree with taking her to the vet but maybe just let her get settled before adding what might be stressful. For the paint, I would stay just cut the affected hair rather than use anything harsh to remove it.

Delighted to hear that you found your cat, and even more so after you had given her up as gone-for-good. I'm sure she's getting some extra cuddles today.
Stepping onto my soapbox for just a second, if anyone is adopting a new kitty can I suggest they keep them indoors to prevent this kind of thing happening. I know that it's hard to bring an outdoor cat indoors, but if you're just starting out you have the choice. End of soapbox speech.
Glad to hear that your story has a happy ending!

Thanks everyone for your best wishes She's curled up on my lap (this makes it hard to type ) and has just helped herself to a large chunk of my lunch.
I'm now wondering if she'd actually got quite lost and has been making her way home - her paws are not scuffed (which I'd think they would be had she been trapped in a shed and trying to get out), she's got quite a few ticks on her (have applied frontline to get rid of them) and she appeared at 6am which seems an odd time for someone to open a shed/garage on a sunday morning...It would also explain how she had a water source for the whole 5 weeks, but not enough to eat. Could it be possible for a cat to find its way home from a long way away? We've lived here for almost 3 years, but how would she know the right way to go?
The most important thing though is that she's home. (And thanks for amending the thread title, jrspet - we definitely feel YAY about it :-) )

Reason: Correcting 'it's' to 'its' - as an ex-English teacher I should know better!

I have in the family at least 5 stories that can tell you that cats can find their own home even if they are left 10 km away. As an example, my gramma cat was taken on holiday to 10 km away, got lost after escaping, and was waiting for gramma back at their home at the end of the holiday...
