I seem to come on here, wise after the fact, to make recommendations. In fact, I recall reading recently about knowing your out-of-hours (Notfall) number 'just in case' and thinking 'Oh, I must find that out...'

Anyway, it's 0900 99 33 99 for Basel (stadt and surrounding areas). Long story short, Jasper, deep shock, bad wound to leg, turns out it's a cat bite which has given him an (almost instant?) infection. 200CHF, several grey hairs and about 5 years off my life later, we're all home, he's asleep and the other 3 are cross they can't go outside because he's confined for 72 hours.

Notfall tierarzt doesn't come quickly to mind in these circumstances. The number is now safely stored in my phone.

I think it was actually you, meloncollie, who recommended this - and having thought I should and done nothing, it seemed advice worth repeating! Jasper's fine, sleeping lots but basically okay. What with him and Maud, I think we're keeping the vets in Basel in business right now

Side note:
There's also information in there stating that if a veterinary office outside the canton mentions emergency service for the Canton of Geneva, THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL VETERINARIAN CARE of the Geneva Society of Veterinarians. I'm guessing this language refers to a veterinarian in Mies (Vaud) who seems to have a bunch of websites holding himself out as an emergency vet in Geneva, which he is not. I've posted elsewhere about that guy based on my own personal, terrible experience. I'm guessing you will be out a small fortune if you call him rather than the actual emergency vet service in Geneva. Stick to the number above.

Also, my own vet is open til 1900 during the week and has Saturday hours if that helps. The info is:

For the Baden area, it says this:

Der Notfall-Tierarzt wechselt in der Region Baden zyklisch. Der Notdienst leistende Tierarzt wird unter folgender Telefonnummer genannt. Öffnungszeiten:

Basically this means in Baden the veterinarian on call is on a rotational basis. If you call the number listed you will be informed which veterinarian is on call at the particular time. This information is also published in the local newspaper, the Aargauer Zeitung. Of course, many veterinarians offer their patients emergency service and you just call your pet's regular veterinarian, leave a message on the answer phone and they call you back.
