English-speaking veterinarians in Zürich general area

I have been getting by on my minimal German at the Tierspital (animal hospital), but I would prefer to find a private vet for my dog who is comfortable in English.

Thanks for any recommendations...

I used a scatty chap near the Strassenverkehrsamt "Gabrieli" was his name, Uetlibergstrasse 268 was his address, 044 462 0612 his number.

In my opinion, he's ok.

Re: English-speaking veterinarians in Zürich general area

I am very happy with our vet, Dr. Jöhr, in Küsnacht ZH. He is an outstanding vet, very thorough, very caring, speaks excellent English (and French, and several others...)

KLEINTIERPRAXIS
Dr. med. vet. Lorenz Jöhr
Allmendstrasse 4
CH - 8700 Küsnacht
Tel. 01 912 04 04
Fax 01 912 00 04

E-Mail: praxis@joehr.com

http://www.joehr.com

He works closely with the Tierspital (animal hospital), and will refer you to the specialists there when necessary.

(And at the Tierspital, I think very highly of Dr. Glaus. )

Thank you for your recommendation - I'm afraid the years have gone by and Dr. Joehr has left the Klinik. I can only find his LinkedIn now, and not a new address. You wouldn't happen to have it?

Also, if there are other, more recent recommendations for a good vet who speaks English, I would appreciate it.

Thank you all

Sorry, I moved away many years ago, so have not kept up with vet practices in the area. (I wonder if Dr Jöhr has retired?)

However, this thread lists several practices in greater ZH, perhaps you could PM the posters who recommended those vets and ask for updated opinions?

If you need a praxis in either Cham, Hünenberg, (ZG) or Feusisberg SZ, though, I can give recommendations.

In greater metro ZH area you will find many vets willing to consult in English. In fact, out my way, it's easier to find an English-speaking vet than human doctor.

Don't be afraid to ask if the vet is willing to consult in English - the relationship between a vet and a client is based on trust, which relies on mutual understanding.

While I live the rest of my life auf Deutsch, veterinary care is the one area where I insist on English. I am my dogs' advocate, and for their sakes I need to be absolutely certain that I am communicating unambiguously.

If you are in the Zürich metro area, no matter who you choose for your primary vet, do make sure you familiarize yourself with the Tierspital. This is where you would likely get sent for complicated cases. It is also one of the premier teaching and research hospitals in Europe.)

He left last year, but many of the usual team are at the new location on Seestrasse - 'After 25 years as a veterinarian in Küsnacht, he would now like to turn to new tasks.'
https://www.tierarztpraxiskuesnacht.ch/dr-med-vet-lorenz-joehr/

I'd read that as he's taken early retirement.

The new practice is at Seestrasse 57, just past Coop Bau+Hobby and on the same side of the road. It used to be the Micro scooter shop and still shows as this on Google street view.

Hi OP,

We use Dr Norbert Frei in 8032, Zurich. His english is excellent and has a receptionist who does speak English but I prefer to use/practice my Swiss German when making appointments. My landlord lives above us and says his skills as a surgeon are first rate. Here is a link to the website:

https://zuri.net/de/zurich/dienstlei...-frei-7222.htm

We really like and trust him. As an FYI, we have a 10 year old yellow Labrador. Good luck and hope this helps!

I also used him, too, when I took my cat to get castrated. Didn't see him personally, but the vet who did my appointment said she spoke English, as did the receptionist (although I opted to practice German). I really liked them, and would recommend them too

Re: English-speaking veterinarians in Zürich general area

Hi Kardyhm,
Saw your message about English-speaking Vets. Here are the ones I know about:
Dr. Andreas Hagen (he speaks perfect English, sorry, don't know if his staff does)
Zürichstr.1, 8134 Adliswil
044 709 06 66

Dr. Bruno Litschi
Böhnirainstr. 10, 8800 Thalwil
044 720 00 11, Mon-Fri 13-15 & 17-18:30, Sat. 9-11
All my doggie English-speaking friends go to him. His offices are a little awkward to get to via public transport - so it's best you have a car.

Dr. Ulrich Coradi
Mutschellenstr. 77, 8038 Zurich (in Wollishofen)
044 481 64 64
The Bus 33 stops practically in front of his office.

Good luck in your search,
D.H.

Re: English-speaking veterinarians in Zürich general area

Found a very nice vet practice in Birmensdorf (only a few stops out of town on S9 or S15). All staff speak English and they are really pleasant and helpful.

Best of all, the vet is experienced in pet export requirements - including Australia and NZ.

That is an important point to have a vet that understands the pet passport system if you are going back and forth with your dog to England. Our vet was on Holiday one time we went and the replacement vet made a pig’s ear of the paperwork. Ended up paying a French vet quite a bit of money for a stamp and a signature.

Re: English-speaking veterinarians in Zürich general area

Hi doggie fans,

I arrived with our 3 labs last Friday, 1 was having treatment in France for a pulled tendon. He's out of meds and the condition is'nt really fixed, which means a trip to the vets. Sadly his Swiss/German is zero like ours so I'm looking for advice on a good, English speaking vet, we live in Mettmenstetten, and as I think it's to much to ask that there is one here, can anyone recommend a vet in the area?

Many thanks

Re: English-speaking veterinarians in Zürich general area

We brought our Lab from the US. She is now 5, and for the past 2+ years we have been taking her to the Tierspital Zurich (Winnterthurstr. 260 8057 - 01 635 81 11). It is easy to get to with public transportation and our doctor is German and did his training in the US, so speaks perfect English. His name is Dr. Kook.

Very happy with him and Tierspital.

fduvall

Looks like möpp covered the map to Tierspital. We took the Tram 7 to the stop Tierspital. From there it is a 2 minute walk following the signs...

I can second the recommendation for Dr. Litschi. I took my slightly nervous cat to him this morning, and had a very positive experience. Dr. Litschi and his staff quickly put my cat at ease, and the cat didn't even notice that he had a vaccination.

Also, Dr. Litschi was very accommodating with both scheduling an appointment (I called yesterday, got an appointment this morning) and with our need for an international health certificate in a few months time.

Re: English-speaking veterinarians in Zürich general area

I recently went to see Dr. Frei, and I also recommend his vet clinic as well! One of the receptionists did not speak English when I called, but quickly put me with Dr. Frei so he made the appt. himself.
They are all very friendly.
