My dog nearly died last night!!!

Little Herbie was playing on our lawn (completely enclosed and quite small) last night running and jumping like a 9 month puppy should. He then suddenly stopped and made a funny noise and then vomited big time.
He then collapsed completely , his pupils were dilated and his eyes lolling around. His gums became as white as his teeth and he started to pant with his tongue out.
We rushed him to the tier spital in Zurich , he was as limp as a dishcloth on the way there but came around slightly when we got there. He was covered in red blotches on his belly and his tongue and lips were swollen.
He was placed on a drip and given cortisone straight away.
Clearly it looks like some allergic reaction leading to anaphylactic shock.
We had to leave him there overnight and at this time I do not know if he made it or not - we are awaiting a call.
Anyone one else come across this before? I have to say the same thing happened some weeks ago and it is very worrying. Maybe wasps/bees in the grass?
Any clues from someone who has had the same experience would be helpful?
I'm hoping he made it.

Re: My dog nearly died last night!!!

OMG poor you and poor little darling! I wonder what it was and if he's better today?

Speakung from experience years ago our doberman dropped dead on a walk - previously seeming perfectly healthy and playful. It happened in a similar way that you described, we went for a walk, I let my two dogs off leash and they palyed around and chased each other, as usual, until suddenly she fell to the side and din't get up. I went to see what was going on and she gasped horribly twice or three times and she was out. Dead. Needless to mention I had to be hospitalized that same evening for I was 7 months pregnant and started having contractions....

All the best for your baby!

Re: My dog nearly died last night!!!

With how violent the reaction was, you are right to assume it was probably an allergy of some sort. I would maybe see if the vet can do an allergy panel (in a controlled environment) to see if they could pinpoint something specific so that then you can either treat it or keep him away from it in the future.

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed that your little pup is alright. Please keep us posted.

Re: My dog nearly died last night!!!

All fingers, toes, paws and dewclaws here crossed that Herbie pull through - thumbs pressed for good measure.

He's in good hands at the Tierspital.

Thinking of you all, and hoping for the best.

I'm very sorry to hear that! Something to consider, I keep reading stories of poisoned pets, where some a*****e who doesn't like animals would drop poisoned laced doggy snacks. Check the area where your dog was playing for unusual food items.

Re: My dog nearly died last night!!!

My dog got stung by wasps twice (the silly animal chases them) and also she didn't get an allergic reaction it made her feel pretty bad for 24 hours: nausea, curled up in a corner, etc.

If your dog is like mine, chasing flies and anything that flies is a big game, resulting in accidents when the bug is a wasp or a bee...

Can you carry an epipen for dogs, like the human version?

Good luck to your doggie!

Re: My dog nearly died last night!!!

Just heard from the hospital - hi is ok this morning!!!!
I will take him to our usual vet later today to see what we can do for any possible future events like this.
Poor pooch we had him castrated on Monday this week so he's not having a good week all told.

Re: My dog nearly died last night!!!

I'm so glad your puppy pulled through. Definitely see what you can do to find the trigger of this. If it was a wasp/bee sting then it's certainly avoidable. If it's a pollen allergy then it's going to be more difficult to manage, especially in Europe.

Maybe he went into shock when he tried to lick his balls? I think I would if the same happened to me.

j/k

Hoping for a speedy recovery for the little fella

Pooch Fiction

It's important that you get a report if any chemicals were involved to see if someone has tried to poison your dog. There are sickos out there.

Second that.

This is why I get so pissy about people leaving their food scraps out "for the birds" in areas where people's pets can get to them. I don't know where that bread came from or what it's laced with.

Have you ever reached into a dog's mouth to pull out chewed up food? YUCK! No fun, but I don't want my boys eating strange things off the ground for precisely this reason.

Re: My dog nearly died last night!!!

Strangely, this thread made me think of a variation of an old chestnut;

"My dog nearly died last night"
"Your dog nearly died last ? How does he smell?"
"It's Ok, he's fine now"

Re: My dog nearly died last night!!!

Oh my gosh.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Herbie!

OP, please try to ask around/keep your ears wide open for dog/animal haters, you never know what they're capable of.
And absolutely cement "No eating from the ground/from strangers" with Herbie.
Can your vet do the allergy tests?

MacGregor's Daughter, that must have been horrific.... so sorry you went through that!

Re: My dog nearly died last night!!!

I'm glad to hear that the pup survived.

However, and for the benefit of the other readers, could you please elaborate on what the cause was? (if known).

The speculation of poisoning seems remote to me, as a constriction of the pupils is associated with anti-choline esterase poisoning (depending on the chemical of course), not 'dilation'.

(chemical poisoning is horrific, and extremely painful for the animal).

I have had my dogs stung by wasps before and they do swell up in big red blotches.... but not the symptoms you described.

Fingers crossed the little fella pulls through.

Re: My dog nearly died last night!!!

hello all,
we picked Herbie up after an overnight stay at the hospital. I am happy to report he is back to normal.
We called in to our local vet (who we like and trust) and the conclusion from all concerned seems to be a bee sting from our garden. Yesterday I spent all day chasing bees away.
This was a very severe reaction which I am informed could be worse next time. So we now carry a syringe and ampoule of cortisone and will need to give him a jab if he falls victim again. The problem is we like walking our dogs and currently I'm sort of paranoid everytime he bounds off. I could not conceive of keeping him on a lead all the time.
Very worrying and I hope it does not happen to any of you good folks.

Thank you for the update!

Maybe the best thing to do is to determine a fixed place for the syringe and ampoule (e.g. blue jacket pocket) and I'd definitely ask the vet for multiples so you can either put them in several places (if you are the only one walking Herbie) or give them to all people responsible for Herbie.

Fly nets might not be a bad idea either.

I'm so happy to hear that the chance of it being some creep spreading poison shrank back to zero.

I hope you all recover from the shock soon and that something like this never happens again.
