Re: help needed for buying a Chipmunk

Depends.
Do you want a talking chipmunk or just the standard version that squeals?

Not all no but mostly yes.

Did you see a chipmunk in the nature? Put it in a cage and see what it will become. Mostly they die way faster than they would in the nature.

Cats and dogs don't live in a cage. If they do, call the protection society of animals.

Birds do, hamsters do and fish live in tanks.

If someone wants to have a chipmunk as a pet and they have the right sized cage and environment what's the difference between that and a bird in a cage?
Or take it one step further, a tiger in a zoo?

Re: help needed for buying a Chipmunk

I would guess that they are classed as "exotic pets" and you need a special license. You'll probably also have to buy a pair, after legislation passed a couple of years ago.

That's an other topic, but yes, I don't like to see a bird in a cage, hamsters too.

Shall we get this conversation on an other thread?

By he way, I don't know much about hamster but I think hey are social and like human attention, no? While chipmunks don't like it.

So what's the point?

Re: help needed for buying a Chipmunk

May I ask why a chipmunk rather than one of the more domesticated rodent spieces?

Chipmunks (Streifenhörnchen) are classified as wild animals in Switzerland, nonetheless keeping them as pets does not require a special permit. (Import does, though.)

I, too, would very much prefer to see chipmunks living in the wild, according to their natural tendencies. Giving them an 'artgerecht' life in captivity can be more challenging than one might expect.

However, if you are absolutely set on keeping a chipmunk as a pet, please do it right. Towards that end, here is a good site from the Swiss perspective:

http://www.streifenhoernchen.ch

Please read their 'Leben In Der Nature' and 'Leben Mit Dem Streifi' articles first.

Re: help needed for buying a Chipmunk

Chipmunks are great pets. Great fun, fascinating, graceful animals.

I am not sure how easily available they are in Switzerland though.
The trick is having a large enough environment, the larger the better, and in the first months not being too tempted to let the chipmunk out of the cage too much. You can in time, and believe me they live a long time so you can have your fun with it out the cage in due time, but it needs to establish its home first, a bit like crate training.

A chipmunk likes to continue its natural instincts to hunt food and store it, so these are little games you can have with you chipmunk. They are also often very good at learning tricks.

Wonderful acrobatic little things and would love to see pics if you go ahead.

Keep us posted.

Re: help needed for buying a Chipmunk

Around here, at least one major garden center, Schilliger sells them regularly in the pet section. However, these seem to be a special breed, something like a Korean chipmunk/squirrel as I recall (maybe lost some in translation).

Thus, I think they are not probhibited as such, but definitely not something just caught in the local forest and caged. They seem to be a more docile breed more adaptable to indoor living.

Here is a swiss vet website that explains a bit about this species-- http://www.veterinaires.ch/animaux/EcureuildeCoree.html

Re: help needed for buying a Chipmunk

I think they would make pretty neat pets. Considering they have a proper enclosure and habitat, food etc. Too lazy to read up on it.

My cat loved chipmunks, the first time he accidentally got outside, I came home to a collection of over 10 chipmunks at my backdoor. Very proud kitty!

Re: help needed for buying a Chipmunk

The term "friendly" is not really applicable to chipmunks the few i've seen are very hyperactive and cautious, so i can only assume that it would take ALOT of time, training and handling to get one to the stage where it is considered "friendly"

Otherwise I would recommend getting a pair of gerbils. I have em and they are easy to source in normal pet shops and make great pets.
they don't generally bite, are very curious and are awake during daylight hours.
they don't smell and are very low maintenance.
I let mine out of the cage regularly and i've trained them to come to my feet as i usually give them a sunflower seed when they are there.

If you are looking for something a little larger try a degu. it is like a larger gerbil and they also make good pets apparently(no personal experience here)

I regularly see them available in the pet section on tutti.ch

I also personally believe gerbils are just as cute as chipmunks.
