Suggestions on keeping dog from pooping in neighbors' yard

Our dog is allowed to run free on the leash in the evenings. She stays in our yard and the neighbors' yard. There is no dividing fence so she can go where she wants. They love her to come visit them, and this is a big step for us because at first they weren't sure of the dog....

Now they still love her to come visit, but the only complaint they have, and they kindly told us, is she may poo in their yard. I'm looking for solutions to keep her just to poo in our yard. I could start working on the training. Also, we could offer to clean it up but it feels weird to 'sneak' over into their yard to clean dog poop.

Any other suggestions? The relationship is going well now and I don't want to ruin it...

Thanks!

If they are happy for your dog to go over, I am sure they would be even happier to see you marching across with an orange poo bag in hand!
There would be no mistaking your intentions...

Otherwise, how about trying to train your dog (positive reinforcement needed) to do her business immediately and then let her wander around afterwards. Once she has done it, well need I explain further.....

Your dog really shouldn't be running around in anyone else's yard, much less pooping on it.

As a dog owner myself, I don't want my dog pooping in my own yard, because as we all know, simply picking up after them rarely removes all the poop, depending on consistency, and that's just gross. If someone else's dog were pooping in my yard I'd be quite pissed, and if my dog was pooping in someone else's yard I'd be mortified.

I second the pooing in the garden bit . But one solution could be to take them outside first to do their business. Dogs are habit creatures so you'll know when she needs to go. When you know she's been then let her have her play time.

Our dogs go religiously morning and evening so we always stroll around the block first for their business then they stay happily in our garden. Albeit a fenced area in communal gardens.

Re: Suggestions on keeping dog from pooping in neighbors' yard

Where a dog is allowed to run free, it nonetheless must be under the owner's (or appointed carer's) control at all times.

If you let your dog outside in an area that is not your private fenced in space, you should be out with her. Your dog should not be out of your sight - that's (part of ) what under control means.

So when you see her go, you clean up immediately.

Make it simple, tell the neighbors that you will be right behind your dog, robi-sac at the ready. Ask if there are garden paths they prefer you to use, or avoid.

I'm sure they will appreciate your responsible behavior.

That said, it's always a good idea to teach a dog to eliminate on command. Very helpful for those times when you want Fido to do the necessary before you leave the house, and you have a train schedule to meet.

To train this, when a dog begins to naturally go, use a command word. Then praise and treat. Repeat until the dog associates the word and the action. Eventually, give the command first, when the dog does his thing praise and treat. Repeat as necessary.

But be aware that nature commands as well - so keep your dog under supervision when outside your private secure space, and pick up immediately.

If you can't supervise your dog when he is off your property, then a fence really is necessary. For your dog's safety as well as neighborhood harmony.

Re: Suggestions on keeping dog from pooping in neighbors' yard

This is all about routine.

With my boy he has a routine with me early AM and late PM. In between he is with dog sitters so assume he exits freely in the woods or wherever they maybe venturing at the time.

He knows, in the AM, that once I get ready for work I will take him for a short walk before he gets picked up. As soon as we reach the grassy patch at the top of steps (we live on a path involving some 150 steps) he does the business, he then starts heading home because he knows its feeding time.

This is the same for night, except in reverse. I feed him when I return from work, and he will do his business at the pre bed time walk, right on time everytime.
