Happy, happy birthday Ebby!

(Hooligan wishes you many happy returns of the day as well, and says to tell you that in her experience this maturity thing is vastly overrated. Girls just wanna have fun, after all. So even though you are all grown up now feel free to carry on being a puppy at heart. )

Happy Birthday Ebby!

Hope you were spoiled rotten! You can put off being a big girl (could you get any bigger?) until tomorrow.

Happy Birthday Ebby ! Our dogs would likely tell your mom that behaving like a "big girl" is boring.

Happy, happy birthday Ebby! Behaving like a big girl is overrated! Lily the Pup sends you birthday wishes. Her mom wishes that Lily (almost 11) could sit quietly next to a turtle without trying to eat him/her!

Ebby is a beauty!

Ebby, you were a gorgeous little puppy, and you are a gorgeous not so little girl now! A most Happy Third Birthday Ebby.

Be happy and live life to the full. Forget all that nonsense about being good, just be true to yourself (in any event, Humans who have the privilege of sharing their lives with animals in general, and dogs in particular, usually adapt to their canines' ways very, very quickly).

Re: R.I.P Cazimir - welcome Ebby!

I'm sure you've already done the same thing but a quick google says clean with a mild antiseptic solution and if possible trim some of the fur round the wound so that is doesn't get into the wound.

Re: R.I.P Cazimir - welcome Ebby!

Oh poor Ebby.

For a relatively superficial abrasion, I usually clean with warm water, perhaps also an antibacterial soap like Betadine, depending on the placement of the wound and the tolerance of the mutt. Clip fur around the area (bearing in mind that mine are long haired) then use Septiclens, a veterinary antibacterial ointment. A human one like Neosporin is pretty much the same thing.

Is she worrying or licking the wound?

If so (please avert your eyes, Ebby) to restrict her access to the wound overnight when you can't watch her, you might need to use an inflatable collar - I prefer these to the dreaded lampshade - or (are your eyes still shut tight Ebby?) to pop a pair of loose cotton PJ bottoms on her, covering the wound but still allowing airflow.

This is one occasion where the patient is allowed on the bed so I can better monitor him/her through the night. (See Ebby, it's not all bad. )

During the day I usually just keep the patient close and distract whenever he/she starts to show interest in the wound.

But but but - if the wound is deeper, if there are foreign particles embedded, if redness or swelling occurs or if seepage does not stop - call the vet. Better safe than sorry.

---

How is her mobility now? Any limping?

---

Oh, and the most important thing: Medicinal sausages.

Hope Ebby feels better soon.

Sorry to hear about your leg Ebby.

For disinfecting and cleaning wounds I use Hibiscrub Soap which the vet gave me. It needs to be diluted. The dogs don't seem to mind it.

A good product for wound disinfection is a spray called Octenisept, also from the vet. Apparently it tastes bad and discourages licking.

If Ebby is licking the wound this will interfere with the healing. So as others have suggested you will need to cover it. This is also recommended to keep the wound clean. Air helps the wound to heal faster but some dogs will manage to get to the wounds if you only cover them lightly with loose clothing. In these situations I have used the self sticking tape (Co-Flex) but underneath it I use gauze.

I have also found that sometimes I can uncover a wound to let it air at night. But it really depends on whether the dog can reach it. Wounds can be itchy when healing.

I only cut hair when it seems really necesary. It seems the dog is more interested in an area where I have cut the hair. Do not shave it....this is very itchy for the dog.

Wishing Ebby a speedy recovery.

Re: R.I.P Cazimir - welcome Ebby!

This is Ebby's mom.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The wound is clean, so no need to fumble around on it and there is very little soft (and short) hair on the inner thigh, no need to shave. It looks a little better this morning, less red and there is no swelling or limping. I guess it will be best to leave it alone for now, as Ebby is not interested in it and doesn't try to lick it.

The medicinal sausages seemed to have helped

It looks much better, thank you. I felt so bad when it happened and it reminded me to stock up first aid items like disinfectant spray and such.
