Bullie Racists_Is he really that scary?

Ok, bit of a rant I guess but have included in pet section as seems more appropriate.

I am not sure if it is me, or perhaps I am being ignorant, but does my dog (avatar pic) look scary? Aggressive? Would you be wary walking past this dog?Is it his features i.e. pointy ears, flat face? When he runs and is happy/excited his mouth is open and he has a big tongue flapping around, to me he always looks smiley, but I guess you can often see his teeth, but not in a snarling way.

Don't get me wrong, many people stop me to pet and stroke the dog and ask what it is or whatever and are fond of him, but I am surprised at just how many people also approach him like it is a savage beast. I just dont see it.

I am just getting a bit annoyed with the amount of people I walk past, be it dog owner or not, that look at him and then proceed to act like he will take them down and rip their throat out in an instant. He doesnt bark, he doesnt growl, he barely has a tail to for it to be upright and alert like you can tell with other dogs. His ears move inwards when he is curious or alert. If he is startled, the hairs down his spine stand up and he does this square off thing, bit like a bull, but he has never done that to a person or dog, more to a misc object. This used to happen when he would see like a motorbike with a cover on it when it was dark at night and he couldnt understand what it was.

Some people do all sorts of strange things, where they scream, normally kids if this reaction happens, or people might do a shimmy side walk, back to the wall kind of thing with arms extended and low to prevent any wild lunge he could make. I am like, really???? WTF!!

Often he will take no notice of people we walk past until they do these strange things, cause he notices abnormal behaviour. When this woman walk past the other day she stuck these bags out she was holding into his face to create a distance where I guess she felt safe. Not that he did anything but exist to bring about this reaction, but of course, he then thought she was trying to greet or acknowledge him so he did look up at and wag his tongue and bum and then she froze on the spot with pure fear. Weird.

I recently walked past 3 people having a group chat on the path near the field where I live. They each had a big dog, one was a lab, one was a collie/lassie looking thing, and I am not sure what the other was. All 3 times as big as my dog. They saw me coming, and there was this panic they all reached for their dogs to pull them close and created this large gap for me and the beast to walk past. I guess I should be thankful that some people have spacial awareness here, but it really was over the top and I had to laugh out loud. I even went BOO as I walked past for the fun of it just because it was so pathetic.

I guess my point is, I appreciate not everyone is comfortable with dogs, and a fear can make people act differently, but surely do they not find when they do start acting like a weird person, staring at the dog whilst moving in an abnormal way that they grab its attention more so, and for the people with dogs, whats up with Bulldogs? I have had a mix alsatian, golden retriever, chihuaha, westie, and other terriers all attack, growl or snap at my dog and still he has never been aggressive back. Everything is a fun game to him.

Enlighten me?

No, he's not scary at all!

He looks a bit like Don Rickles.

Re: Bullie Racists_Is he really that scary?

You know that your dog is friendly, but someone meeting him at random doesn't.

I would be wary because he looks similar to dogs I've seen with muzzles.

But I wouldn't do anything like you describe as he doesn't look that scary.

I'm sure he's loving, sweet, loves children, and politely sniffs another dogs rear end, but have you ever seen that Arnie film, Predator I think it was called?

Bless him

Re: Bullie Racists_Is he really that scary?

I cannot see how anyone can be scared of a frenchie - maybe because they are very bulky for their size.

Over the years I have had 3 English Bulldogs and far from being scared I just got comments like - " I wouldn't be see dead with that" " Beauty & the Beast" " That girl needs glasses to go out with that".

I think the problem is that people associate French/English Bulldogs with the bad press that other bull breeds have - we know that you cannot get a softer/ kinder breed than bulldogs/staffies but sadly pitbulls and bull crosses have made the public very fearful and irresponsible breeding has not helped .

I love his looks.

Scary?

Looks like one of those wimpy French bulldogs!

What's it supposed to be, a Pitt-bull?

Re: Bullie Racists_Is he really that scary?

He's a cutie. FB's are really popular so I'm surprised people are scared of him. But I guess some people are just scared of dogs of all types. I was scared of dogs when I was little and I can sometimes be intimated by big enthusiastic dogs. That's why I have a little little one!

Re: Bullie Racists_Is he really that scary?

He looks well 'ard emminently squish- and cuddle-able. A perfect poppet.

It's a crying shame that so many people believe the scare-mongering. And it's shameful that the media - and our government - are among the scare-mongers. 6 years post-Oberglatt children are actively being taught to be afraid of dogs, the listed breeds in particular.

But let me say it loud and clear: BSL is wrong. There is absolutely no basis for the prejudice against the bull and molosser breeds.

As anyone who knows anything about dogs knows: It's the other end of the leash. Deed, not breed.

Moreover, these days in Switzerland with the draconial BSL in force in half the cantons, owners of the listed breeds have had to jump through so many hoops, have had to prove their proficiency and responsibility beyond a shadow of a doubt. Their dogs are actually often much better trained and socialized than many of the cute fluffies.

I wish it were otherwise. I wish people weren't sheeple.

Good on your little guy for being such a great ambassador for his breed, and for all the bull and molosser breeds. Here's hoping he gets the chance to win hearts and minds.

He's sooooo damn cute.

Re: Bullie Racists_Is he really that scary?

Swiss are weary of all Bull Terriers. I'm a firm believer that it's in the training not the race that counts...

I want a Roman Nose but I'm going to wait till I move back home as I could not ever have a dog muzzled up like Hannibal Lecter...

Before I answer, please give me an idea of scale: what size is the shoe in front of him?

Clearly this particular dog is the result of a union between Lucifer and Vladimir Putin. I suggest at the earliest opportunity you bring it into the Swiss authorities, tell them you have never seen it before and sue it for stalking. I can recommend a good lawyer (though I am expensive)
