Cat repellent

Not my pet, so I don't know if it's in the right place or not. One of the neighbourhood cats keeps crapping right outside my door. Not pleasant to clean up after a long day at work. Does anybody know of any effective cat repellents? I will of course be asking my neighbours to make sure the door stays shut, too!

Re: Cat repellent

Landi has something. But I have no idea of its effectiveness nor of its possible downsides (e.g. toxicity, etc)

Re: Cat repellent

Having a dog, I've experienced problems with local cats competing for territory - mainly pee marking - which also stinks and lingers.

Tried several powder and granule type stuffs with varying degrees of low success; even electrical beeping devices, which are also not 100% effective.

Don't go out of your way and spend too much, for something that's a bit hit and miss.

As suggested, Landi is probably your best bet ..... but what is also supposed to work (as cats apparently aren't too keen on the smell) are anything lemony (lemon peel itself), coffee grounds, rosemary and lavender.
The first two you probably don't want on your doorstep to trample in, but when you're in Landi look to see if they have a small rosemary and/or lavender plant in a pot that you can put on your doorstep.

We have a rosemary one, which has exploded and is quite big, and the occurrence of cats pee in the vicinity seems to be less.

Failing all else a good liberal sprinkling of cayenne and black peppers, with a few flakes of dried chilli, may also deter.

Don't know about the others, but Lavender will not work, I'm sure. We have loads of it out front and our cats just love sitting on, in and under it.

Re: Cat repellent

Just another thought - do you have any wild mint growing near your door? Sometimes it's not a matter of using a repelling agent but removing whatever attracts in the first place. Cats LOVE mint.

As for repelling, you didn't mention if said cat is leaving a mess on concrete or grass. There are some tactics you can use for each depending on where kitty is choosing to do its business.

Re: Cat repellent

There's "cat repellent" in little sprays being sold at Petland... don't buy these. I bought some to keep my ladies from putting their nails in my (now destroyed) chair. After spraying it on the underside they walked up to the chair, intently starting sniffing it, after which they started rubbing their cheeks on the chair. I was not sure if I'd bought cat repellent, or cat aphrodisiac / pheromones. It was pure rubbish.

What did work for me was scored orange (or any citrus like fruit) peels. They absolutely hate it. Maybe putting a Citronella plant near the offending area might do the trick if you don't like unsightly peels lying around.

Re: Cat repellent

Sorry, maybe should have clarified this is INDOORS. I live on the first floor of a building and the little bastard keeps shitting on the carpeted area outside my door, but inside the building. Thanks for the suggestions. I have some free time tomorrow to try and sort this out. I have a rosemary plant that I may put out there. Might even squirt it with lemon juice.

Hopefully my neighbours will also take some notice of the note I left on the door.

Ugh, that's even worse. You will first have to do something to get rid of the lingering scent from the repeated deposits. Otherwise any repellant doesn't stand much of a chance. Good luck!

Becoming a homeowner has pretty much made me loathe cats to a degree I never thought possible.

I used pepper flakes for a cat that kept pissing on our back door, and it worked.

Re: Cat repellent

I was taught lavender is a natural cat repellent. So just put a pot of lavender next to your door. Futher plus: it looks pretty

Re: Cat repellent

There's now a pot of rosemary next to the door, plus the whole area has been sprinkled with lemon juice and pepper. Plus I left the note on the front door emploring my neighbours not to let cats in, as one keeps leaving "little presents" by my door. Hopefully with all of these factors combined...

Mostly because cats love Lavanda, mine get mesmerized by it, so not a good idea to add it to your front door, me thinks.

Kamarate, sorry for your issue, I thought it was hilarious when you clarified it is indoor - oh dear, oh dear.

Yes, everybody seems to be finding it amusing except for me! I think it's like a Dutch oven - hideous when you're the victim of it, but hilarious when you hear it's happened to someone else.

Schadenfreude. You bastards.
