Re: Please HELP - Kittens to adopt

Wow, Whitecrow - what a fabulously kind and generous gesture. I, too, would love to rehome one, but unfortunately (as I am currently staying in Malta) I can't.

Smoky raised the subject of the treatment of birds on the island; a situation that appals me. If the Maltese are not caging domestic and exotic birds, they are shooting them for sport and I am part of a lobby group here that is acting to have this vile 'sport' outlawed.

Re: Please HELP - Kittens to adopt

Thanks NSchulzi and Marianna! It warms the heart that there are people out there at least supportive of such efforts. It was pretty depressing in Greece, but even here in Switzerland, far too many people who have heard what I'm doing with these cats looked at me like I am some sort of idiot with too much money and time on my hands, and who can't simply kickback and enjoy a vacation...

So spread the word please, if you have some contacts who are interested - please send them my way. Thanks!

Not to piss on your parade, but this probably had the reverse effect as you intended as it merely incentivized the sellers, and thus the trade and capture of the birds. No one cares what you do with the birds as long as you buy them; in fact, they can now make double profits off of those same birds now.
You may piss all you like if it gives you pleasure.

The birds I set free were sitting in a little cage outside the shop in freezing wind, huddled together for warmth. I did consider just opening the door for them, but was not wanting to get arrested, and causing problems for my hosts. So simply bought them.

It seemed that every rooftop in Malta housed cages of wild birds,, and it seemed a "national sport" to set up capture nets everywhere. They put a cage with some birds in the middle of a net laid out on the ground, their voices attract the free birds, and then big brave man sitting behind a rock pulls a string and the net closes over the wild birds.

Yes, the Starfish story is also my philosophy. I cannot save all the birds.
And do not have the resources to go rampaging over countries to save their wildlife.

Apparently, also, the Storks stop overnight there on their way to the South. While I was there, an activist slept under their tree to keep away people who wanted to capture them. He had his car set on fire. He left it to burn out, knowing the culprits wanted to distract him so they could capture a couple sleeping birds.

He is one of the same breed as the wonderful author of this thread!

Re: Please HELP - Kittens to adopt

Just want to say Whitecrow you have a big heart....they are all so adorable, especially the one eyed cat (I always have a soft spot for the special ones). I wish I could have more, but I have just got two kittens....now six months old.

You have a heart of gold

What will you do if you are "stuck" with them? At least you're allowed to have pets in your apartment, usually that can be a problem...

Whitecrow, just in case you haven't already done so...

You can list on the Tierdatenbank, the Switzerland-wide database of animals needing homes, as a private person. The listings are not limited to rescue organizations.

One needs to download the form 'Antrag Heimatlos - Privatpersonen', and fax it in to the number listed:
http://www.tierdatenbank.ch/cms/tier...strierung.html

Sure, I understand drmom. Taking on a pet is always a lot of responsibility, especially if you want to do it right.

Being stuck with them is not an option for me. I will try and use everything at my disposal so that they find a good home. I would have trouble believing that there aren't enough good people in Switzerland that are ready and willing to give some sweet kittens the love they deserve.

Thanks bluecat. It seems a lot of people have gotten new cats as additions to their families recently. Good for you.

The one eyed sister is actually having her operation tonight as I am writing this. I really hope all goes well, but the eye could not be saved and has been causing problems continously. The vet said that if it wasn't for us, this particular kitten would be dead already. Such insights make the efforts seem well worth it!

It was a nice idea meloncollie, but apparently the animal has to have been born in Switzerland only. It's stated on the first page of that application. Well, that's that...

Schade.

I've only ever used the database under the egis of a rescue, in which case animals from outside Switzerland are allowed.

But I understand why they do that. As per the link from Tier Im Recht, bringing in animals that you don't intend to keep yourself - while in this case admirable - is officially discouraged because of the homeless situation here, as well as the dangers of the trade in puppy/kitten mills. Even among the animal welfare community there is a contingent, perhaps the majority here, who have strong feelings against importing animals from other countries.

(This might also be why the rescues you approached were less than receptive - a rescue needs to be very careful so as not to be accused of 'Tierhandel', which would affect their reputation and possibly license.)

You might keep trying some of the rescues who focus on international work, though - perhaps you might get a more sympathetic hearing. Especially if you make it clear that you are not asking for resources, only publicity, that you will bear the cost of the kittens' care yourself and keep them with you until they find homes.

I know that you've said you can't keep the kittens - but what was your plan B should they not find homes?

Have you thought of also putting out a plea for foster homes? A foster agreement (in writing is best for all concerned) where you would continue to bear the financial cost of the kittens' care, where you would continue to be the kittens' owner, be responsible for rehoming, do all the publicity work and homechecking - but where someone would take a kitten (or two) in his/her home for a limited time, might be worth exploring. There may be an expat or two who is able to take on short term responsibilities, but cannot make a life long commitment at this point.

If I think of something else, I'll let you know... unfortunately all my rescue contacts are with dogs, I have no connections in the cat world...

Paws still crossed for the kittens.

Re: Please HELP - Kittens to adopt

I appreciate your tips once again, meloncollie! Yeah, I basically understand how it works around here. I also know that there are homeless animals in every country, even here in Switzerland, but the situation does not compare to what I saw in Greece. Certainly this is no kitten mill either - I lost more money on this than I could ever hope to recoop, but I'm not in it for the money, this is a gift of life for these poor cats.

Before I make any kind of drastic moves regarding fostering or begging on the doorstep of these very complicated and somewhat buerocratic local rescues, I'd still like to try the old-fashioned way of appealing to people on this forum and elsewhere, who love animals, are ready to give them a good home, and wish to support me in taking this good deed towards a happy end for all!

Are there two little black and white ones? They are sooo cute. Are they male or female? We have a one year old castrated male cat and could maybe take a kitten as a companion for him.
Will have to persuade OH first though.

Yeah, there are two of them Belgianmum, both males. Both are very energetic and playful, as all happy kittens should be at this age, but the one with the pink nose is also crafty and smart! Even when he was tiny and weak on the street, it took us the longest time to catch him! We were actually kind of worried, because we had the mother and rest of the fam, but not catching him would have meant certain death for the little guy. Luckily he was caught and was very quickly happy to join the others.

Oh if I didn't already have 4 kitties all who I also rescued and bottle fed and a 2 year old daughter I would scoop one. Let me know ask some of my new friends here and let you know. What you are doing is admirable to say the least.

Re: Please HELP - Kittens to adopt

Good news! There has been some movement! Just had a visit from a lovely young Australian couple last night, who found out about the cats through this forum, and they have decided to adopt two boys - the little chocolate one and the black/white one with the pink nose. So that leaves 7 kittens more to go. Hope there are still some more takers! Thanks to everyone for continuing to follow this thread and for spreading the word.

I would love to have one. They are adorable, but I don't think with living on the 4th floor, this is a good idea.
