My cat is becoming asocial

Hi

My cat is now 2 1/2 yrs old, and the older he gets, the more asocial he seems to become, for example he never really liked my parents in-law, but originally he would tolerate them; now he really can't stand them even coming closer! (and no, it does not just happen with my step mother, who is a very nice person indeed )

I don't think anything "special" happened that would cause this behavior, however he is an "apartment cat" and since my husband got a job, he is indeed often alone at home during the day..

What should I do? How can I get my cat to like people more?

Re: My cat is becoming asocial

I think it's probably not uncommon for cats to be anti-social. My cat usually hides under the bed whenever someone comes over (unless he has his cape on, of course). But if you want your kitty to warm up to your in-laws, perhaps you could have them try to lure him to them with a few treats or some cat nip?

Cats have excellent memories. He will probably learn to associate your in-laws with treats and lose his fear of them.

Good luck!

Putting his scent on your in laws should help too.

Re: My cat is becoming asocial

Maybe he has his reasons

I'd suggest getting a 2nd cat.
They're much much happier when they're not alone.

Re: My cat is becoming asocial

My cat is the same. When I first got her she'd come to see my guests, even sit on their laps. Then she gradually went off people, first strangers and then even family members who come by on a regular basis. Now visitors are honoured if they see a whisker... but she'll come out by the time my guests have reached their cars.

I've given up, and just apologise for her unfriendliness!

Re: My cat is becoming asocial

If he was use to interacting with you or your husband during the day and now he is left alone, he is probably feeling lonely. It might be wise to get a 2nd cat for companionship. Also, I know this sounds strange, but leave a piece of clothing you have worn on the bed for him to lay on. They love to have their owners scent around when their left alone. Good luck!

Asocial cat? How can you tell?

I'd caution you on getting a second cat - our cat didn't take too kindly to the "new" cat we brought home a few years ago ...

Re: My cat is becoming asocial

Maybe worth a try checking - alongside social aspects like loneliness - also physical ones like enough space and activity, food, health;

but also if OP changed something in the house like TV set, CD player and high sounds that cats dislike, perfume on people, chemical cleaning carpets, soap on the floor, alcohol, somebody entering with shoes from where a dog lives ....

Did you ever had a cat before?

Anyway cats are animal, and they are never "social", not in the way you describe... What do you expect that the cat will welcome your family with a cup of tea??

Anyway many cats are like that, they can be aggressive, nice, etc...

Is your cat neutered? because it helps in making them less aggressive, maybe it's just that your cat grew balls

Sometimes they can be nice, you play with them, and suddenly they decide they have enough and give you a good scratch, well they are like that, that's what they do!

Well, it might happen, but I wouldn't say it's the norm. Cats are domestic animals for thousands of years and no wild lions any more.

My cat was very savage (asocial plus aggressive when exposed to human contact) as a junior, now she's the opposite.
