Where to get Natures Miracle?

Hello pet lovers.

We have a little holiday place which came along with a dozen or so homeless cats. A couple of the cats do belong to other home owners in the area but they just leave them outside when they aren't here. Often for weeks at a time. The majority of the cats though really are wild but very hungry. Anyway to make a long story short I let a couple of these cats them into our basement when the weather turned really cold and now of course they don't want to leave. BTW...I did have them checked for Microchips and neither of them have one. I've also put collars on them with a capsule and my phone number so if they do belong to someone else they can call me to let me know. The 2 kitties that have been staying inside at night are well behaved use the kitty litter box but I made a mistake with a 3rd cat who ended up peeing under our stair case. Back home in the past I used a product called "Natures Miracle" to clean up any cat pee odor and it is fantastic, totally neutralizing all cat pee smells but I can't find it here. Has anyone come across this product here? If not, has anyone here found something similarly as good. I'd really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.

Re: Where is get Natures Miracle?

there are some home remedies found on this website. Vinegar, one of the ingredients, is a universal remedy, probably in your natures secret stuff...

Re: Where is get Natures Miracle?

I've not seen Nature's Miracle here, nor have I found a supplier who can ship it cost-effectively to CH. (F&S will ship it from the US, but delivery is cost-prohibitive IMO.)

Beaphar is the manufacturer of most of the odor-control products I've seen here; I've had mixed success with these.

The product I'm most satisfied with is Greenfield's, an enzyme-based spray. It is no longer carried at Fressnapf (where I first bought it), but as recent as about a year ago I was able to special order it from them:

Good luck!

Good on you for helping the homeless kitties.

Just wanted to add a point - you mention having checked the cats for microchips, but did you also report them to the cantonal Meldstelle? A finder is required to do this by law. If you haven't see this thread for the necessary links:

Re: Where is get Natures Miracle?

Good suggestion. Unfortunately I don't understand German too well so don't fully understand what needs to be done for found cats on that website but a picture will says a thousand words.

Last week I took 2 sick kittens to the cantonal shelter and we looked up the website http://www.stmz.ch to see if any of the cats were posted there. The lady there told me that they were fully aware of the overpopulation of cats in this area but she didn't tell me to post the cats on the website. One of my neighbors thinks they are all wild but I'll try to figure out how the website works and get something posted. Hopefully the shelter can get the kittens healthy and adopted.

The shelter said they will give me a cage to try to catch some of the totally scared and wild cats so we can have them fixed and vaccinated. It won't be free but least it will help these poor little kitties and get things under control. One thing for sure is that since I started feeding some of these cats there are a lot less feathers flying around my garden so the birds are busy chirping happily away too.

In a nutshell: If one finds an animal, one is required to inform the cantonal authorities so that the legal owner can be reunited with the animal. If one finds an animal and simply keeps him without reporting to the authorities, that could be construed to be theft. (Unlikely in the case of feral cats, but you do need to understand the law.)

There is a Wartungsfrist of 60 days before a stray animal is deemed abandoned and can be placed for rehoming. The date you report the animal starts the 60 day clock ticking. Ownership of a stray cannot be transfered before then, so especially in cases where it is likely that there is no owner, for the animal's sake it is important that one reports a stray promptly.

If you wish you may care for the animal during the Wartungsfrist, but your contact details must be included in the post. If you choose to care for the animal, you are responsible for the cost of the animal's care. If an owner is found, you may ask the owner to reimburse you... but be aware that since you took on those costs voluntarily the owner is not obligated to do so. If one is not able to bear the costs of a stray animal's care, one must bring him to the cantonal shelter.

The place where one reports the animal is called the cantonal Meldstelle. Entering the info in either the Gefunden- tiere or STMZ sites, both linked in the other thread, fulfills your obligation to report the animal. If you have any questions, call the numbers given.

FYI, there is theoretically no such thing as a stray dog in Switzerland, as every dog is required to be chipped. Cats are another matter, however - many pet owners do chip their cats, but there is no legal requirement to do so.

But as above, the finder of any apparently stray animal has a legal obligation to report him/her.

But good for you for caring and doing what you can to help these kitties.

Hope you find a cleaner that works for you, too.

Re: Where is get Natures Miracle?

Thanks so much for taking the time to help explain the laws about reporting stray animals, I really do appreciate having this this information.

That being said I do think I that need to clarify the situation so that no one misinterprets my actions. I did take the 2 cats that I currently allow to come into my basement to the Canton Shelter. They told me they were not chipped and not in the database. The shelter is full and they seem to be happy with the fact that I am doing what I can to help them. They agreed to take the sick baby kittens that were begging at my door because they were friendly and could probably be adopted. There are still 2 other kittens out there that I can not get close to, yet, and they are also starving and sick.

Please don't think or even suggest that I'm trying take anyone's cats. Yikes! I already have my own beautiful Main Coon who doesn't really like having other cats around and he's so fussy. Most of all he prefers to be center of attention and all these cats stress him out so I can't even take him to our holiday house. He's always been an indoor cat and last summer he got sick after being bitten by one of the Ferrell cats.

As I mentioned this is a holiday home for us. We are not living there but it is still close enough to where we live and work that I can try to get there to help look out for some of these cats who need some help when it's cold. Since putting collars with my contact info on the friendlier cats (at my vets suggestion) I've only been able to identify 1 owner so far. That person is also only here for a holiday home and does not come to feed his cat regularly, he simply leaves it out on it's own and as I learned has done so for many years. This particular cat is not the kind of cat that likes to be inside but at 13 years old he does seems to appreciates the food that I offer and the warmth of a little cat bed outside my door under a covered area. Please be sure I did speak with his owner who seemed very happy that I was looking out for his cat and had made the attempt to contact him to make sure he wasn't a stray. Unfortunately that still doesn't change the fact that this neighbor doesn't bother to come to feed his cat on a regular basis. When I'm there, if Bijou comes to me I will give him some food but only now that I know his circumstances.

I know I may not have fully understood the law as you have described it but I have done everything I possibly could to try to make a difference for these poor kitties. When I think about it perhaps this law as it is described might be one of the reasons most of my neighbors prefer to chase away the wild cats and consider them nuisances, not wanting to take any responsibility for them. Certainly if there were the same number of starving wild dogs running around like there are of cats in this area people and the cantonal authorities wouldn't be depending on the kindness of a soft hearted foreigner such as myself to step in to help. I'm certain more would be done to try to control that type of situation. It really is a shame because I think cats are just "little people with fur" who need a helping hand every now and then but mostly they are pretty darn independent even if it is to their own detriment.

For me this is really more of a moral issue vs. what I'm legally obligated to do. Of course I would be very careful to follow the laws of the land which you have been so kind to share with us here. Thanks very much for that.

In the meantime I'm still trying to find the ingredients to make my home-made cleaner to get rid of the cat smell from the bad cat that decided to leave his mark under my stairs.. Do you have any suggestions on where I can find a 3% solution of Hydrogen Peroxide here in Switzerland? I went to a couple of stores today but was stumped again with my language barrier.

Re: Where is get Natures Miracle?

You can get the hydrogen peroxide at an Apotheke. They sell it in small bottles, not the gallon jugs I used to buy at home. If you think that you'll need a large amount, ask the pharmacy clerk if he/she could order you larger bottles. It is usually behind the counter, so you have to ask for it - it's not on the shelves as you might expect at a pharmacy at home.

Don't worry - I'm sure no one thinks you are doing anything wrong. It's just important to understand what one is required to do when one finds a stray animal. It's difficult, because there is a strong preference in Switzerland for pet cats to be allowed outside and many owners don't put collars on their outdoor cats - it's often hard to know if a cat is a stray, or someone's pet gone walkabout.

But there is indeed a problem with semi-feral cats - many of whom are the offspring of an outdoor pet cat.

Keep doing what you can to help the critters.

I don't remember exactly, I think they ship from the Netherlands so it wasn't too bad. I ordered a big package which was quite heavy but if you were to order something small I think it would be more than affordable.

Re: Where to get Natures Miracle?

Of course what you have done by giving the kitties someplace nice and warm to sleep or simply get out of the weather is fantastic, in case there are some other cats out there who are too feral to come inside out of the rain though, some of the suggestions here may help.

I really like the idea of making the outdoor cat shelters, a place or two where I've lived in the past could really have used them.

That is really a good idea and could be replicated here. I've already made little beds and hideaways with old towels and blankets under some covered areas around the house. They do use them but some of the cats have become quite territorial and now chase away the poor starving kittens. I try to feed them after all the others have left. Based on how they are with each other it looks like I'm dealing with at least 2 colonies of cats coming around. Thanks for putting up this link. It's given me some good ideas.
