Sachkundenachweis (SKN) Theory Course in Basel [Mandatory Dog Handling Course]

My dog and I have been working with our trainer, Evelyne Sonanini, since we arrived about 18 months ago (in English, including the SKN practical course), and we absolutely love her. She has decided to offer the SKN theory course in English for the first time next month so I thought I'd share the details here in case there are any potential dog guardians-to-be (who also happen to be EFers) in the Basel area. If you're interested or want more information, it probably makes sense for you to get in touch with Evelyne directly (since I will not be attending the course myself and I have nothing to do with her business), but I'm also happy to answer any specific questions you might have about my experiences working with her by PM.

Here are the course details:

Dates: March 8 and 15
Time: 19.30h
Location: Brunnmattschulhaus (Ingelsteinweg 6, 4053)
Price: 120 CHF

More details and the registration form can be found at: http://www.teamtraining-arlesheim.ch...kursdaten.html

I hope this information is useful to someone on the forum and if you do end up registering, please get in touch with me by PM so that we can plan some future play dates for the dogs!

You have no idea how much this will help me! We're moving to Switzerland in April and my German isn't the best for I haven't spoken it in 7 years. I will make sure to contact Evelyne Sonanini!

That's great! It's too bad that you're going to miss the class in March but I'm sure it will be offered in English again later if this round is a success. I heard that two people have already enrolled for this session, which is great. Hope to meet you once you're settled in Basel!

Re: Sachkundenachweis (SKN) Theory Course in Basel

I'll be in a town called Langenthal, however it's only 40 min - 1h on the train. (Looked at sbb.ch The prices are so much lower than here!)
I'll keep my fingers crossed for it being successful. If it isn't maybe she will do a 1:1 class?

And it would be great to meet! You could show me where good dog-walking spots are. I think my pup might be a little upset for the beach is her favourite place at the moment. She cries if we walk the other way, lol.

Re: Sachkundenachweis (SKN) Theory Course in Basel

Here's another vote for Frau Sonanini.

We've recently done both our theory (which you have to do before you get your dog) and our practical course (which you have to do within first year of ownership) with her. She is not only very nice but *really* knows her stuff. She clearly knows how dogs "think" and consequently how to train them so that they enjoy and learn at the same time.

I understand she is the only trainer in Basel offering both theory and practical courses in English.

She mentioned that she is re-doing her website in the near future so info in English can be found quickly and easily.

My wife and I highly recommend her.

I haven't met her directly but she has been really nice and answered all my emails on time when I was looking for a puppy class. Unfortunately she does not provide them but we will join later for the young adult courses and the SKN practical course

Re: Sachkundenachweis (SKN) Theory Course in Basel

I can also vouch for Evelyne Sonanini and the English theory course. I was really dreading this course because I have owned dogs all of my life, but the BVET wouldn't accept this as none of my previous dogs were registered in my name. Anyhow, the theory course is not the most exciting class if you have ever owned a dog. Nonetheless, I did find the final section regarding laws, regulations, etc... in Switzerland extremely helpful. Evelyne made a huge effort to make sure her slides were translated correctly and that all of her information was complete and correct. She was especially helpful in the question and answer sessions when she was a bit more loose and less self conscience about her English.

I hope that she repeats the course. I would recommend it to anyone needing to take the Theory course and isn't stellar in Swiss German.

Re: Sachkundenachweis (SKN) Theory Course in Basel

Hi we may be moving to Zurich later this year and we have been advised that we will need to take 4 lessons of Sachkunde-Nachweis and my questions is, what does this involve? Do we both have to take the course? Can you fail the course (if so what happens to the dog we are bringing with us), my girlfriend is extremely concerned if I take a new job and we do not get the necessary permit for the dog.

Thanks,

Tony

Re: Sachkundenachweis (SKN) Theory Course in Basel

Just read the link and also states a practical course must also be taken within one year of passing the theory course. Is this true as hadn't been told this when I emailed the relevant dept in Zurich. They just mentioned the theory course.

Re: Sachkundenachweis (SKN) Theory Course in Basel

You need to do the theory course first. The practical comes second within a year of getting the dog. It is to show that your dog is under control in various situations. I found this really useful and interesting as it was 6 hours with the trainer and then practicing on my own in between. We have a very well adjusted, happy and mostly obedient dog. I still the trainer from time to time to work on a few issues and we are ironing most things out.

Dear all,

I did the theoretical training with Claudia, fully in English, she is verykind and can give you hundreds of tips about your dog. I did it in private session(250chf). She is coming at your place, very comfortable, and she adapts to yourworking schedule. She has as wellpractical lessons.

Highly recommend.!

All the info is here wholetthedogsout-basel.ch

Good luck!

Re: Sachkundenachweis (SKN) Theory Course in Basel [Mandatory Dog Handling Course]

Hi all,

I'm writing you concerning this online course you can do (http://www.online-hundeschule.ch). I thought it was a good compromise and the course was given in English.

I wanted to share my experience and I have to say it was a nightmare. I passed it before getting my dog (as you should do) and 7 months later, I received a letter from the Basel Kanton that it was not valid...

The person organizing this course told me that some vet in Basel decided that it was not valid and they will put me in a new course.

Long story short, I had to sit in a room for 4h listenning to the teacher speaking only Swiss Deutsch. What a waste of my time....

I just wanted to make sure it doesn't happen to someone else!

Forgot to mention that I suspect this person "RES" to be part of the organizing course.
He/she only posted something related with that online course.

As you can tell, I'm really angry with them

Re: Sachkundenachweis (SKN) Theory Course in Basel [Mandatory Dog Handling Course]

There is only one approved online SKN theory course and it's run by Wolf Zemp and is ONLY available in German - not English. Anyone else advertising as such is lying and if you do a theory course with them, you'll have to pay to do it all over again.

http://www.blv.admin.ch/themen/tiers...x.html?lang=fr

Here's his website:

I also did the course with Claudia Mundt at Who Let the Dogs Out and it was fantastic. She made it a lot more interesting than I expected and her English is superb.

I have just received a notice today from the authorities saying similar. I have contacted the company but I am insisting on a refund. This is completely false advertising on their part and this company should be avoided.
