Dog-friendly sightseeing in Zürich?

I've been so busy just getting over here and getting settled that I haven't really done the "sights", but my sister is coming to visit, and it occurred to me that she won't want to spend her holiday sewing curtains... however, I'm not allowed to leave the dogs in the apartment for longer than 2 hours, so we'll have to take them with us when we go out.

Any suggestions for interesting/fun things to do with two large* dogs in tow?

*a Portuguese Pointer cross and a Labrador - both well-behaved and friendly, but I'm very much aware that they can look intimidating to non-dog owners due to their size.

Re: Dog-friendly sightseeing in Zürich?

Uetliberg, also Rapperswil is nice for walking around with dogs in tow, if weather improves you can picnic along the lake there and enjoy an ice-cream.

Re: Dog-friendly sightseeing in Zürich?

Thanks both. Is there anything not specifically dog-walking related we could do? Do any of the museums allow dogs, or is there a sculpture park or similar?

Re: Dog-friendly sightseeing in Zürich?

I can't help with Zürich city (because my dogs are definitely not Stadthunde) but are you considering some day trips further afield?

If so, thinking of outings that are not hikes per se, a very dog-friendly day out is Ballenberg Open Air Museum:
http://www.ballenberg.ch
This is one of my favorite 'first time in Switzerland' outings when relatives visit - and we always bring the dogs.

And if you like gardens don't miss Insel Mainau:
http://www.mainau.de
(Can be very crowded on weekends, best to go weekdays if the dogs are uncomfortable in crowds.)

Also, It's been many years since I was last there, but Augusta Raurica used to be dog-friendly. IIRC, dogs are not allowed in the museum, but welcome to explore the ruins with you.)

---

Nearly all my adventures with dogs in tow are hikes - simply because that's what the dogs love best. But if you are hiked-out, perhaps just a journey up a mountain to a nice cafe for lunch - enjoy the view with the dogs at your feet? Braunwald is an easy journey from Zürich, for instance. http://www.braunwald.ch/en/index.cfm

---

And to add to Tasebo's excellent suggestion of Rapperswil - why not take the boat from Zürich to Rapperswil? A lovely day out, dogs welcome.

Or a boat trip on the Walensee, stop at Quinten (known for it's wine) for a nice meal.

Re: Dog-friendly sightseeing in Zürich?

Thanks, meloncollie, those all look great.

Uetliberg is definitely on the itinerary, as we live half way up the hill anyway There's plenty of woods and fields around here, but I think my sister might like to see a little bit more of Switzerland!

I think I'll also take her to the zoo, just because I love the zoo, but that will have to be at a weekend when the OH can do dog sitting.

Re: Dog-friendly sightseeing in Zürich?

IKEA - they have those doggy chalets by the front door (pure jest here! - nothing special about CH IKEA, nor would I leave my dog to do some shopping - priorities)

Meloncollie, thank you for the Mainau suggestion. Have wanted to visit there for years and, well, just forget it is relatively close to this part of CH.

If one gets the timing right I believe you could make Halbinsel Au part of Rapperswil outing by boat - factoring in time for wine stop before continuing rest of way. Lets keep hoping for the better weather

Re: Dog-friendly sightseeing in Zürich?

Another suggestion is the town of Einsiedeln, famous for the Kloster (monastery).
http://www.einsiedeln.ch/home
http://www.kloster-einsiedeln.ch

As you'd expect, you cannot bring the dogs into the Kloster itself - but you could trade off holding the dogs while one of you pops in to have a look around.

There is a delightful walk along the Pilgerweg above the monastery that is dog heaven, dogs on lead are welcome to walk around the stables and monastery grounds.

The town is lovely, lots of good restaurants. One of my favorites is the Gasthaus Meinradsberg, just across from the Kloster :
http://www.meinradsberg.ch/index.html

There is also a nice walk from the Monastery to the Sihlsee.

Einsiedeln is an easy train ride from Zürich, or go by car.

ETA:

FYI, Einsiedeln is canton SZ - dogs must be on lead in all public spaces.

Re: Dog-friendly sightseeing in Zürich?

It's a shame you can't find a dog-sitter -- at least for a while when your sister is here, so that you can do things that wouldn't also have to allow the dogs to be there with you.

I'm not sure if you'd be comfortable with that, but I've seen some threads on here from people offering dog-sitting services. Here is one regarding a pet-sitting network:

Pet Sitting Network

And you'll also find other threads by doing a search here on the EF for "pet sitting."

Good luck!
