Transfer Cat from Switzerland to Hong Kong

Dear all
does anyone here know how to tranfer a Cat to Hong Kong without putting the cat into Cargo? By Swiss there is direct fight but Pets are not allowed take into cabine. Cargo inside is extremly cold and noise.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge if you know it.

Re: Transfer Cat from Switzerland to Hong Kong

I think you'd have to check with each individual airline to find out if they'll let you take a pet in the cabin. But cargo has a special area for animals which is certainly not cold, though it may be noisy. It can and is heated when animals travel in the cargo hold. The main problem I see with taking your pet in the cabin is the amount of time they're going to be there. Short flights aren't such a problem, but airlines may be reluctant to allow it for long-haul flights.

Did you do a search of this part of the forum for pets to Hong Kong? There may be some other threads on the subject.

When traveling in a cargo plane, pets are put in a special area, which is heated and well insulated and sound-proof. Laws are very strict and animals must be handled with care (they can't stay on a cold/hot Tarmac, etc). Immediately before and after the flight, pets are kept in an animal centre where they get food and water, and their well-being is checked.

Don't worry, your cat won't be treated as a suitcase if traveling cargo!

Re: Transfer Cat from Switzerland to Hong Kong

I think your main problem is going to be finding a direct flight with any other airline except Swiss. I did a quick check on ebookers and all other airlines have at least 1 stop-over. Unfortunately, Hong Kong requires that pets come in on direct flights only.

Re: Transfer Cat from Switzerland to Hong Kong

Hi again
Thanks for the links. Good news, taht i talked to the vet last week, he told me that there is "sleeping pills" especally for Cats and Dogs. 2 hours before the flight feed it to your pet, then sleeping for 12-16 hours.
That is good solution. What we need is now a good cage to keep her warm and safe :-)

Do not sedate your pet. Seriously.

Most vets, including the AMVA, strongly recommend against it, and many airlines will refuse to allow your pet on the plane if sedated.

Sedation during flight has caused many pet deaths.

http://www.petrelocation.com/blog/pe...en-flying-pets

It can also make nervous animals worse, as the animal can awaken during the flight, is then fully disoriented, and in his confusion can injure himself.

It is far better to spend time before the flight to acclimate your pet to the travel crate. This is obviously more difficult with cats than dogs, but it still can be done.

Please - do not sedate your pet!

Re: Transfer Cat from Switzerland to Hong Kong

I agree with Meloncollie, I wouldn't want my pet sedated for any flight, but especially not for a long one. Most cats will settle down and sleep anyway once they get used to what's happening.

Check what size the shipping crate needs to be with the airline too. They may require something bigger than the ordinary cat carriers. Get your pet acclimatised as Meloncollie suggests and everything should be fine.

With any luck you won't get the earful I got from my cat when I picked her up after the flight from the UK. A whole hour and a half telling me about her week in a strange kennel place and then all about that flight thing. Then settled down and went to sleep after giving me an ear ache.

Re: Transfer Cat from Switzerland to Hong Kong

You need to check with the airline you will fly. Every airline can have a different pet travel policy. Some airlines will allow you to bring your cat with you in the cabin. In such case the pet carrier needs to fit under the seat in front of you. If you sedate your pet, some airlines will not permit that. If they do, they may require documentation from the Vet that it was approved. Also note that HK has a lot of import restrictions on pets. I don't know the details, but I think you need written approval from the HK authorities before you fly there to bring a pet, some kind of import permit.

Re: Transfer Cat from Switzerland to Hong Kong

Lappi, if you work through the forms referenced in the links that Medea provided, your cat MUST travel as manifest cargo - which means in the hold. You have no other option - so you might as well go Swiss, as they have a good reputation with animal transport.

http://www.afcd.gov.hk/english/quara..._g2_jul13b.pdf

The animals must be transported by the fastest and most direct route from the exporting country/place to Hong Kong. Animals must be transported to Hong Kong as MANIFESTED CARGO. Transport as excess baggage or hand-carried baggage is not permitted.

Additionally, see this about the captain's affidavit:

The animal has travelled the entire journey without leaving its crate and did not come into contact with any other animals. In the case of transshipment or transit via other countries, the animal did not leave the cargo transshipment area of the airport of the airport. NOTE: the animal may not be eligible for import or may be detained if these conditions are not met.

You will need to keep this in mind when you plan your cat's travel.
---

I brought my dog into Hong Kong, but that was 20 some years ago, under a different regime, so my experience likely no longer is relevant.

However, even back then the paperwork was complicated and the consequences of screwing up unbearable to think of. So I used a professional shipper to take care of the paperwork, plan the travel, troubleshoot, etc. You might consider doing likewise if you are unsure of the process.

FYI, a pet relocation professional with a good reputation based in Switzerland is ACE Pet Moving:

Re: Transfer Cat from Switzerland to Hong Kong

hi, we sent our cats from HK to Switzerland last summer by cargo.Everythings goes well, but if you are really concern about using cargo, it should be ok to hand carry cats on board. However, I recommend using swiss air as they really care about animals, they have special people to take care of the animals in during the cargo ride, there should be a limit size of your cats if you want to bring them on board and you need a special sit for if you are carrying them.Remember, every animal that just arrived in Hong Kong will need to be supervised by the government for 3 months, so you are not able to meet your cats. Good Luck ps:we used swiss air

Please text me if you need any information.
